Meet Beaver,
About: Despite his size, Beaver is anything like a typical ‘big’ dog. He is gentle, sweet & sensitive. A genuine cuddle bug with a loving nature. He’s a little unsure in new environments & new people, so he is best suited to someone with experience, ideally with someone who has experience with dogs on a shy/nervous side. We assume that he suffered some trauma in his previous home & we are working with him to help him overcome this (he is is doing great!)
Despite his initial reservations, Beaver is still friendly and affectionate. He loves to be near you and cuddle. He likes to feel safe & his way of feeling safe is being next to his favourite people.
Beaver must be in a calm & quiet home as he is sensitive to loud noises.
Ideal Home: Beaver would be fine to live in a townhouse/duplex, standalone home or on a farm/acreage. As long as the yard is medium to large with high secure fencing.
Access to inside the home is a must for Beaver as he is super engaging & loves to be around people.
Family: He is also open to meet kids from 12 years & up, reason for this is due to his timidity.
Beaver is fine to live with people who work part-time or work from home/someone always home.
Furry Friends: Despite Beavers initial shyness, he is open to meet dogs. His lack of confidence is evident though. He was unsure what to do but gave all the signs that he was open to make friends. We matched him up with a less playful dog which we feel gave him a better chance because we wanted to make sure this his assessment was positive. With a more boisterous, confident dog, Beaver may have gotten a different outcome as his confidence would have plummeted.
So, providing your dog is calm, easy-going & matches Beavers behaviour we feel that Beaver would be a great friend.
As we cannot test, we are unsure how Beaver would go living with or meeting cats/pocket pets. This would be up to the discretion of his new owners.
Training & Development: Beaver would benefit from post-adoption training, such as training at home to cover basic commands/obedience as well as ongoing training for his confidence. Engaging with a pro will give you an understanding into his needs & a training program can be put in place.
Beaver is still learning his name, but he knows how to ‘sit’ (and cuddle). He is food motivated and always takes treats nicely. Treats would be good to have on hand to mark his progress.
We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.
Play: Beavers energy needs re mid-range, and he would benefit from interaction, walks, or play from 20-30mins a day to keep him content. Beaver is yet to find a toy that he likes. He prefers personal play & human interaction.
Beaver needs a little reassurance with his walking. In his previous home he was probably (and aggressively) corrected when on a lead so he’s always on alert, thinking that he is doing the wrong thing. We are working with him on his confidence & trying to teach him that it is ok to walk and make mistakes. We do not correct our dogs in a way that causes them harm or distress, so we are trying to unpick that trauma for him. He is best walked with a harness so that any pressure from the lead is evenly distributed around his body, rather than focusing on his neck.
Staff Comments: We assume that Beaver never had a bed to call his own – he doesn’t use any beds we offer him or blankets. He curls up on the concrete floor instead. We have begun crate training him, which is proving to be successful. Beaver is very affectionate and if you sit next to him, he wants to be as close to you as possible, often leaning in, like he is giving you a hug. We assume that his previous home left Beaver with a lot of trauma and we are doing our best to undo that, because he deserves a loving, warm home.

With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as flawless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories. Most left in the shelter by their owners. The information we receive is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks will surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
So please keep in touch with us after adoption so that we can help you settle your new family member in and address any unexpected behaviours.
