Meet Ruby – A Sweet and Resilient Cavoodle Looking for Her Forever Home

Ruby is a loving Cavoodle puppy who has been through a lot in her short life. Born with a condition in her left hind leg, she required surgery to correct a Grade IV Medial Luxating Patella. Her condition also involved severe medialization of the tibial tuberosity, muscle atrophy, and abnormalities in the femur and hip. Ruby has already undergone major surgery, followed by several weeks of restricted movement to allow for proper healing.

She has been desexed, fully vaccinated, and is now recovering well from her surgeries. Ruby has had post-surgery X-rays, but she isn’t completely in the clear yet. Between the ages of 14 and 16 months, she will need another round of X-rays and further surgery to remove a pin from her leg and a surgery to further correct her patella. These procedures will need to be specifically completed at North Richmond Vet Hospital.

Her future family should understand that additional medical care and costs are involved, and there is a small possibility that her left hind leg may need to be amputated if further surgeries don't fully resolve the issue. However, her current treatment plan is designed to save and strengthen her leg.

Ruby has been fostered in a caring home throughout her recovery. She is a highly affectionate and playful pup who adores human company. After weeks of restricted activity, Ruby is eager to run, play, and explore, but her foster family has noted that she can be a bit anxious—a trait likely linked to her confinement during recovery.

While Ruby is incredibly sweet and friendly, she does have a few quirks. She tends to get jealous if other dogs are receiving attention and would thrive in a home where she can be the center of attention. For this reason, Ruby would do best in a household without young children, though older teenagers may be a good fit.

Despite her challenges, Ruby is a happy, bouncy dog, but she still limps on her bad leg due to muscle atrophy and a low pain tolerance. With time and care, her muscle strength should improve. She will also benefit from ongoing training and obedience classes to help with her social skills and manage any remaining anxiety.

Ruby is a wonderful, lively companion, and she’s now ready for a loving forever home that understands her medical needs and is prepared to provide the care she deserves and she will need to be a home with access to both indoors and outdoors.
