Leanne is a pretty, affectionate, very kid-friendly kelpie lady just aching to find herself a new family to love and be loved by. She really craves some cuddles and attention first thing in the morning but then is happy to just chill out near you on her bed on the floor or snooze the day away in her crate. She gets on very well with the other foster dogs in the house, but has the typical kelpie high prey drive so no cats, chickens or other pocket pets please.
Leanne is very food motivated so should be supervised at meal times until she settles in to her new home (she was originally very protective of her food but has since learned to relax now that she knows she will get fed every day as much as she wants). She can now be fed right next to another dog with no drama. She is truly excellent at playing catch with treats and loves the challenge, which should amuse the kids!
Leanne would definitely benefit from some formal obedience training; while she knows some commands like sit, stay and get back, she sometimes obeys and sometimes not. While she knows and responds to her name, her recall is very hit and miss if she is enjoying playing with other dogs.
She sleeps in her crate happily all night with the door open. I have never locked her in there as she stresses badly if she is locked away. She is mostly fully house trained (and if she has access to a doggy door, I think she would be perfect).
Leanne loves her daily walk round the block and walks well on a slip lead, otherwise she tends to pull a bit. She is very interested in meeting any children we see on our walks, she grew up with children 2 -10 years old. I think she might be an escape artist, she is very lithe and lightning fast, so secure fencing is an absolute must in her new home. She loves a ride in the car and happily gets in and out of the car on command. She generally does not bark in the car. She was reputed to be an expert at killing snakes before coming into foster care. Also they said ‘not suitable to be around livestock’.
Leanne would love a family where she can play again with kids or with a doggy pal, running around to her heart’s content. She has come a long way in foster care and with a loving family to give her ongoing security and affection I am sure she will blossom into the wonderful companion and ideal family member that she truly is.
