About Mallard
💙 Meet Mallard 💙
HOUSEHOLD- This gorgeous boy is more than ready for his new home and is looking for an owner who is ready for him. He is a German Shorthair Pointer X, a breed we do not get in often. He will require a home that is educated on his breed and may have even owned one before. He has shown us nothing but love and affection and only become abit jumpy when he is over excited or feeling alittle impatient. He would best suit a family who will involve him in everyday life indoors and out, and have the time and know how to offer him the mental and physical stimulation he needs. He will not cope well in a backyard alone all day and will require good secure fencing as he can be a good escape artist if not!
ON-GOING TRAINING- German Shorthair Pointers are known for their skills in the dog sports world. They are high energy, intelligent and at times, challenging to train. Mallard would thrive in a dog focused home where the family can get involved and allow him the chance to train daily. He could also enjoy trying new things such as canicross, rally obedience, agility, scent work or retrieving like he was bred to do.
ON LEAD- Even though Mallard can walk quite well already, he will require on-going lead training. He can walk quite well in a calm environment but is easily distracted and attracted to different movements and sounds in the big wide world. He will need time to settle and focus so that everyone can enjoy the walk together.
PLAY/TOYS- Mallard loves to play! He enjoys a variety of toys including soft, squeaky and bouncy toys but he especially loves tennis balls and will return the toy to you with ease especially if you keep playing fetch!
OTHER DOGS- Mallard appears to be dog social and has enjoyed meeting a variety of dogs in the facility. He has shown us that he enjoys some playful interactions but is also 100% happy to do his own thing. He could be suitable to join an existing dog in a new home or by himself if he is with his people.
While he has shown himself to be dog social at the facility we unfortunately cannot test for group dog settings such as a visit to the dog parks, beaches etc so if you were hoping to visit these places we would recommend postponing your trip until around 3mths post adoption until he has had time to settle in and feel comfortable with his recall commands and, his bond with his new family
CATS/OTHER ANIMALS- In the facility, Mallard showed a calm interest in the cats when they were friendly towards him. When they hissed, he got very scared and took some time to settle down. Mallard could possibly live with friendly feline companions but would be very stressed in a feisty cat household.
CARE/GROOMING- Mallards lovely short coat will require minimal maintenance with a weekly brush, monthly bath and monthly nail clip to keep him looking good. He could benefit from a sensitive skin or gentle conditioning shampoo due to the dander that can be seen in his coat and the skin sensitivities that are common for German Shorthair Pointers.
EXERCISE/NUTRITION- Mallard has not been a fussy eater and loves his two meals a day plus treats and chews. He is being fed an adult diet and has really enjoyed any food puzzles or food challenges he has been given. Licki mats, slow feeders and snuffel mats will be great addition for Mallard to help increase his mental stimulation and keep life interesting!
