About Zig
**Before applying, please remember that adopting a puppy into your home is a huge commitment, and very demanding of your time. Puppies require daily exercise, positive and varied socialisation, grooming, training and playtime. When applying, please consider your work hours, holidays, and how busy your personal life is. Puppies will need someone who is home for most of the day with regular focused input, especially in those first six months after adoption **
NAME: Zig
BEFORE SAFE ESPERANCE: Came to SAFE Esperance from the pound
BREED: Beagle x
Breed Traits: A beagle is a small scent hound used for hunting hare. They are active, hardy, affectionate and also stubborn, so training requires patience. They love to use their nose, are inquisitive, determined and food focused. Being pack dogs they generally get along well with other animals and humans. They need plenty of exercise - at least an hour a day - and can be destructive if unexercised or bored. Beagles can climb so require good high fencing to contain them.
**************************************************************************
ASSETS: Laidback and affectionate. He just wants to be with his people.
FAVOURITE THINGS: Snuggles!! Nothing makes Zig happier than cuddling on the couch or having a belly rub. He is a really sweet boy who loves to hear “good boy”. Once you’ve got his trust you will have a loving and loyal companion for life. He has started to enjoy jumping through the shallows at the beach with his foster carer and their dog.
ENDEARING FEATURES: He has a curly stump tail which is quite cute! Zig can also melt your heart with his soulful stare.
OTHER ANIMALS: Zig has been living with a medium sized dog in his foster home and could live with another similar sized dog after gentle introductions. He is untested with small animals and does have a tendency for rough play and chase therefore small animals are not recommended. He would benefit from continued socialisation and this is a commitment we would expect from his new owner.
GENERAL INFO: Zig is good with his sit and stay, he comes to his name and is house trained. He is reluctant to use the dog door to go outside and this can result in accidents at night. However, his carer is working to help him feel confident to take himself outside. He walks nicely on a lead most of the time but can get excited like most puppies.
Zig can be an anxious boy who will chew things you’d rather he didn’t when he is bored or stressed. He would benefit from a home where he can be with his people more often than not and where he gets regular exercise. He will also need some patience as he settles into his new home so that he can feel safe and comfortable.
Due to Zig's difficult start in life and moving foster homes, he is currently on medication to help with his anxiety and the future changes he will go through when being adopted and settling into a new home. We don't envisage that he will need to stay on medication for his lifetime as finding the right home where his needs are met will be the answer to his wellbeing and happiness.
ESSENTIALS for Zig:
** an active, loving home where someone is there for most of the day, essential in the first six months after adoption
** a home where he is treated as part of the family and is allowed to be inside or out as he needs and to sleep inside at night
** a decent sized, well fenced garden where he can run, play, sniff and explore in safety
** attendance at training school and continued training into adulthood for him to learn and grow confidence – essential
** continued positive, gentle exposure and socialisation
Zig will have bursts of energy while a pup and we envisage will be medium, and high energy at times as an adult dog. Even though he is a mix of breeds Beagles are high energy dogs and excellent companions for active people.
He could live with dog-savvy gentle children over 10 years of age, depending on experience, who will play and interact with him but know when to give him space.
