COULD CHIEF BE THE ONE FOR YOU?
Handsome little Chief is still just a pup at 8 months old, he has found himself in need of a new home due to his family moving overseas.
Chief is a friendly pup who enjoys meeting new people, Chief will bounce around in excitement to say hello, he does calm down quickly but needs reminding of his manners at times. Chief doesn’t realise his own size and being 8 months old, he isn’t the most graceful of dog and still exhibits puppy behaviours in times of excitement including mouthing. Chief may accidentally knock small children over and would be best suited to a home where everyone is over 5 years of age and who have experience with boisterous, large dogs.
Chief has had some basic training; he loves to learn and is very clever, he would love a new family that is willing to put in the time and energy into taking him to training, group classes so that he can socialise and learn under distraction would be perfect for Chief. Both food and toys are big motivators for Chief, this boy will be a dream to train.
Chief is still a typical pup that when bored, will make his own fun. Chief will need plenty of physical exercise, but most importantly, will need lots of mental stimulation through games, puzzles and training sessions to keep him occupied and out of mischief.
Chief is inexperienced with other dogs, he is very friendly and just wants to say hello, but at times can make a big scene with lots of noise to express how excited he is to meet another dog. When Chief calms down and is able to say hello, he is inquisitive and friendly with other dogs, but at times doesn’t quite know doggy etiquette and can be a little forward wanting the other dog to play.
Chief would benefit from living with an older dog that can correct him when needed, but also who will be happy to be his playmate. Chief would also be fine living as the only dog in his new home. Chief’s interactions with new dogs will need ongoing work, he is just a big over-excited puppy that is frustrated and who thinks everyone wants to be his best friend.
Chief has not been tested with cats or other small pets.
Chief loves people, he is a true ‘German Shadow’ that just wants to be wherever you are! Chief would love to have someone home more often than not, he may even be up for going to work with his new humans and going on adventures, with the right training and guidance, there isn’t much this boy couldn’t do!
Chief is extremely affectionate with his family, but also to all people, this boy has never met someone he didn’t instantly love, cuddling up is his favourite!
This gorgeous boy has the most wonderful temperament, he just needs someone willing to give him the time and effort to ensure he grows into the well-rounded, well-behaved dog that we know he can be. If you think you could offer Chief a loving home full of adventure, playtime and training, we would love to hear from you! Medical notes
When Chief was surrendered to GSRV it was initially thought that he had elbow dysplasia. We took Chief in and had him checked out thoroughly by our vet, we had x-rays done on his hips, elbows and spine and all came up clear.
Chief was diagnosed with Panosteitis (growing pain) which was determined to be the cause of his lameness in his back legs. Panosteitis is a condition that resolves itself naturally by around 18-24 months of age, recurring flare-ups can occur during this time and can be managed with anti-inflammatories, they usually last no more than 3 weeks and other than being a bit sore and needing to take it easy for a few days, has no effect on the dog whatsoever. Chief is currently not experiencing a flare-up and is very much a healthy pup, once he has finished growing, this condition will not have any long-lasting effect on him whatsoever.
Adoption details
We offer a 'Foster to Adopt' program. This means that the dog will go to live with their adoptive family for 4 weeks to ensure it is the perfect match for both the dog and new family. After the 4 weeks is complete, if all has gone well, the adoption is formalised and your new doggy companion is officially yours!
If you are interested in adopting from us, we ask that you fill out the Adoption Application form on our website (via the link provided below) with as much detail as possible, including the name of the dog you are interested in.
We do not rehome female dogs to a home where there is an existing female dog. Whilst there are always exceptions, it is generally unwise to have two females together; two males can sort it out, a male and a female can sort it out, but when two females fight, the results can be disastrous. For this reason, following the advice from numerous Veterinary behaviourists, as well as our own experience from the last eight years, we do not rehome females into homes with other female dogs.
All of our dogs are de-sexed, vaccinated, microchipped, flea and worm treated
