About Fred
💙💙 Fred’s Story 💙💙
We’re sure that by now, most people have heard about the plethora of health issues that poorly bred French Bulldogs experience. Unfortunately, little Fred is one of those dogs.
Dumped at our Erina facility and unclaimed (despite being microchipped), Fred was clearly unwell from day one. At just two years of age, Fred was in big trouble 😢
Fred’s laboured breathing meant he was unable to exert himself without experiencing respiratory distress. Every breath was an effort and the noises he made were heartbreaking. He was unable to behave like a normal, young dog and had to be confined to a crate to limit his activity.
Fred was quickly diagnosed as suffering from BOAS (brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome). This is a term that describes a cluster of symptoms that are caused by particular genetic traits.
BOAS surgery is an expensive, sometimes risky, veterinary procedure that is imperative for certain dogs, to give them ANY quality of life. Fred had that surgery and immediately went into foster care to recover 💙
Thanks to Fred’s amazing foster carer Gabriela 😇 and her family, Fred now has a chance at living a life with some semblance of quality. His breathing is now much improved! The vet was happy, but the dramas weren’t over…..
As Fred became more mobile it was noted that his back legs looked bowed. Subsequent X-rays have revealed that he has luxating patellas in both his back legs. To correct this issue is very complex, as he would also need surgery to straighten his legs, otherwise the patella corrections will ultimately fail. The decision has been made NOT to put Fred through this extensive surgery, as he is currently happy, mobile, and finally enjoying his life 🐾
We are looking for a new family for little Fred to live his best life🫶
Fred’s ideal home will be a single level property. Someone with breed experience would be very favourably considered. Fred is a very loving boy, who adores people. This cuddly potato would do best in a quiet household, perhaps with a retired couple or single person who’s home more often than not. He currently shares his foster home with an older, desexed female English Staffy.
Fred will not be the type of dog to ever tolerate excessive walking, vigorous play or extreme exertion. For this reason, a home without children is preferred. We do believe however that he can live a happy, comfortable life with someone who understands and accepts his limitations.
