About Duncan
💙 Duncan 💙
HOUSEHOLD- This tall, dark and handsome boy is Duncan and he has afew things on his wishlist for his new home. One…a home who has had previous dog experience so that they can understand his on-going training & emotional needs. Two…an active lifestyle where he can be included in daily activities and build his confidence and life skills. Three….a more mature patient household due to his mouthy play style and excited energy.
ON-GOING TRAINING- Duncan is intelligent and has high food & toy motivation but can be easily distracted and over stimulated. He can sit on command but will require a patient handler to continue with basic obedience and life-skills to help keep him out of trouble. Toys and human attention/affection can also be motivating for him, making us think he will be eager to learn in a low distraction environment building upto busier setting.
ON LEAD- Duncan can be strong on lead but has had limited leash experience. He will require on-going leash training and appears more comfortable on a long line. He ping pongs on a shorter leash between handler and the end of the line when excited or wanting to investigate a smell or object he desires.
PLAY/TOYS- Duncan is playful and happy to engage with a variety of toys. He is keen for handler involvement but can also amuse himself when left alone. He has shown a preference for chasing and catching tennis balls or playing tug with ropes and absolutely adores a fur covered tug that he can chase and shake.
OTHER DOGS- Duncan is still learning appropriate dog manners. He can be cautious of other dogs on their approach towards him but once they are closer he is keen to interact. He can be quite rude and tends to try to mount them and not read their signals well when they have had enough so he will not be suitable for dog parks or beaches but could possibly live with another canine companion after afew meet and greets to make sure they get along well.
CATS/OTHER ANIMALS- Duncan is not suitable for living with cats or other smaller creatures due to his excited response when around them. He would likely bring stress to their home and that is not fair on them or him.
CARE/GROOMING- Duncan’s coat will require some maintenance. It is of medium length and will require weekly brushing, monthly bathing and monthly nail trimming. At this stage he does not love grooming and his new owners will need to be patient while setting up a positive routine so that he feels safe and will stop fidgeting to avoid the situation all together.
EXERCISE- Duncan has energy to burn and will require 1-2 walks daily. He would also benefit from games in the backyard and some training to help keep him physically and mentally occupied.
NUTRITION- Duncan has been enjoying a variety of food options at the shelter and has shown no obvious signs of a sensitive stomach or fussiness over what is served. He would be best maintained on a good quality feed twice daily along with treats for training.
BREED- Dutch German Shepherd Mix - DOB 25/7/23
