About Poppy
Owning a Maremma Sheepdog like Poppy can be a wonderful experience! Here are some detailed tips to prepare:
Hair Management
Vacuum Ready: Keep a vacuum handy for the inevitable fur that will accumulate around the house. Investing in a high-quality vacuum designed for pet hair can make cleaning easier.
Regular Brushing: Brush Poppy frequently to manage shedding and keep her coat healthy. A strong arm and a good brush are essential.
Exercise Needs
Daily Walks: Ensure Poppy gets long walks twice a day. Maremmas have high energy levels and need regular exercise to stay happy and healthy.
Playtime: Besides walks, include playtime in the yard or a secure area where she can run and explore.
Noise Levels
Barking: Understand that barking is a natural behavior for Maremmas, especially at night. They are protective and alert dogs. Training and keeping her indoors at night can help reduce excessive barking.
Interaction and Training
Communication: Maremmas can be independent and may not always respond to commands promptly. Be patient and consistent with training.
Socialization: Ensure she has plenty of opportunities to interact with other dogs, which she loves. This will help her stay social and well-adjusted.
Living Arrangements
Sharing Space: Be prepared to share your couch and bed with Poppy. Maremmas are affectionate and enjoy being close to their family.
Large Bed: Consider getting a large bed that accommodates both you and Poppy comfortably.
Family and Kids
Respectful Kids: Poppy is great with kids over 6 years old who respect her space and know how to interact with her gently. Supervise interactions to ensure everyone is happy and safe.
Additional Tips
Training: Enroll Poppy in obedience classes to help with basic commands and good behavior.
Diet and Nutrition: Feed her a balanced diet suitable for large, active dogs to maintain her health.
Grooming: Regular grooming sessions, including baths and nail trims, will keep her looking and feeling good.
By following these tips, you'll be well-prepared to provide a loving and suitable home for Poppy. Enjoy the companionship and protection of your Maremma Sheepdog!

Adoption details
BARC adoption officers will work with you to help you find a dog or cat that matches your needs, they will discuss things like yard fencing, exercise requirements, other pets and family members, lifestyle factors, and breed experience. To help make this as quick and easy as possible, we ask you complete and adoption questionnaire (located on our website, or you can complete on when you visit). This helps ensure that we are introducing you to the most suitable animals we have available.
We encourage all members of the household to attend a meet and greet with a pet prior to adopting an animal. If the animal being adopted is a dog, we will also require existing dogs in the household to attend the shelter as part of the meet and greet.
Holds can not be placed on animals over the phone, and can only be applied at the discretion of management.
