Meet Dewey,
About: What can we say about Dewey?! Dewey is a gentle little guy whose slightly nervous and quite sensitive. He is an agreeable young boy who is friendly and happy and a bit of a people pleaser if we are being completely honest.
He is excited to meet new people, yet also timid when meeting new people and once he knows you, you get to see an affectionate side of him. We'd like to call him boisterous because he kind of is... But kind of isn't at the same time. He may have ants in his pants because he doesn't sit still for long as the world is just far too exciting! He may jump up when he first meets you as he wants to say hello.
Dewey is best suited to someone with dog ownership experience. He is also best suited to a calm & quiet household as he is sensitive to loud noises. Dewey would make a great fit for active families as he likes to be involved in outings & adventure.
Ideal Home: Dewey would do well in a townhouse, house or farm/acreage, with a medium to large yard & high secure fencing.
Dewey would absolutely love the possibility to be inside where possible so that he can snuggle up to you on the couch, or curl up on your bed for the night.
Family: Dewey is open to meet kids from 8 years and up, the reason for this is because of his nervous disposition and his sensitivity to loud noises. His instinct is to drop to the ground when he is feeling overwhelmed and it is important that his new family have kids that are of an age where they can understand this behaviour.
Dewey is fine to live with people who work part-time hours.
Furry Friends: Dewey is open to meet other dogs that are calm and respectful in nature. Dewey is a submissive dog and will be overwhelmed by confident dogs. During his dog assessment Dewey was excited to meet and offered play bows. When he felt uncomfortable he was able to tell the other dog that is how he was feeling and luckily our control dog is respectful of other dogs because Dewey's behaviour was identified. In non-controlled environment the other dog may not be as intuitive which may result in Dewey regressing in his dog sociability. Dewey does not tolerate inappropriate playing.
As we cannot test, we are unsure how Dewey would go living with or meeting cats/pocket pets. This would be up to the discretion of his new owners.
Training & Development: Dewey would highly benefit from post-adopting training, such as training at home to cove basic commands & obedience as well as group classes so that he can keep his dog social skills sharp & learn how to be more tolerable of other dogs play styles/increase his confidence around other dogs. Confidence training would be beneficial for Dewey - he needs confidence building with new people, new environments and everyday objects as his.
Dewey know show to 'sit' and having treats on you during training sessions would be a great idea as he is food motivated.
We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.
Play: Dewey has medium to high energy levels and he would benefit from exercise, walks or play time from 30-60mins in length.
Dewey walks ok on the lead, but he tends to zig zag rather than walk in a straight line due to his lack of confidence. As his confidence grows so will his walking skills. He is best walked on a harness.
Staff Comments: Dewey is a happy boy who needs a patient and understanding owner to help increase his confidence. He is very sweet & wants to interact and share human interaction but isn't confident enough to do so naturally. Dewey is very gentle when being patted but can struggle to settle. He loves a good chin scratch and will lean against you for maximum cuddles.

With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as flawless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories. Most left in the shelter by their owners. The information we receive is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks will surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
So please keep in touch with us after adoption so that we can help you settle your new family member in and address any unexpected behaviours.
