Meet Poppy,
About: Poppy is a gentle girl who genuinely loves to love. She is friendly, happy and quite playful. She loves to explore her surrounds & take in the sights & smells on offer to quench her curiosity. Poppy loves to engage with you, shower you with affection and she gets excited when she sees you coming!
Poppy is best suited to be adopted by someone who has breed experience or has dog owner experience in general.
She is also best suited to a calm & quiet household as she has a sensitive side.
Ideal Home: Poppy is fine to live in any property type/dwelling. As long as the yard is medium to large, with high secure fencing.
Spending time indoors is high on Poppy’s priority list because she loves being around people and she was also indoors only in her previous home.
Family: Poppy is open to meet kids of any age and is best suited to live with someone who works part-time but her independent streak tells us that she’ll be ok if you work full-time as well.
Furry Friends: Poppy is best to be the only dog in the home. Although her previous owner stated that she was dog social we did not see this in her dog assessment. Poppy was a little too timid and very uncertain when meeting the other dog and gave clear signs that she was uncomfortable.
Poppy may be open to making friends outside the confines of the shelter but for now we would say that she needs to be the only dog in the home until she has decompressed from shelter life.
As we cannot test, we are unsure how Poppy would go living with or meeting cats/pocket pets. This would be up to the discretion of her new owners. However, it is important to note that despite Poppy not being a racing Greyhound, Greyhounds in general aren’t well suited to live with smaller animals due to their naturally high prey drive.
Training & Development: Poppy would benefit from post-adoption training such as training at home and maybe group classes to assist with her timidity around other dogs.
With additional training, Poppy could be the type of dog that you can take to a dog friendly café or social event as she is quite a chill, well behaved dog, but her attitude around other dogs needs to be taken into consideration. If Poppy doesn’t like to be around other dogs then a dog friendly café will not be the best option for her as it will overwhelm her.
Poppy knows her name, she also knows ‘sit’ & ‘down’. Poppy loves her treats and they will be a great training tool to have on hand.
We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.
Play: Poppy’s energy levels are low-medium and she would benefit from 20-30mins of exercise, play or walking a day to keep her happy & healthy.
Poppy walks beautifully on a lead and is best walked with a collar & lead. She is not too interested in toys but she loves personal play with will often do play bows when playing with her human friends.
Staff Comments: Poppy is a super sweet girl, she Is so affectionate and happy. She is timid at first but warms up to people quite quickly. She will make you laugh when she gets excited!

With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as flawless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories. Most left in the shelter by their owners. The information we receive is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks will surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
So please keep in touch with us after adoption so that we can help you settle your new family member in and address any unexpected behaviours.
