About Darla
Meet Darla, a spirited pup who embodies everything wonderful about her breed. Despite her unique journey, Darla is ready to bring endless joy to her forever home.
Darla is an energetic game-machine, always ready to play and keep you entertained with her infectious enthusiasm. She adores her toys and relishes her daily walks, where she continues to learn the ropes of public manners like a champ. Although she's still mastering the art of not herding cars, bikes, and trains, she's making great progress.
Darla has a condition called Cerebellar Hypoplasia, a neurological condition affecting her balance and causing her to walk in a distinctive, yet endearing, manner. This condition is a part of who she is, but it certainly doesn't define her. Her personality shines brightly, unaffected by her unique gait. Darla also has experienced some significant trauma in her past, whilst we don't know exactly what she experienced, we do know that she was found as a stray covered head to toe in bite wounds and does have some scaring, including her ear which you can see in the photos.
In her journey with us, Darla has shown incredible intelligence and resilience. She's proven to be a quick learner and has made remarkable strides in her behavior on walks, though she can be reactive to other dogs. With patience and positive reinforcement, Darla continues to blossom and grow.
Despite her initial challenges, Darla's zest for life is infectious, and her determination to overcome obstacles is truly inspiring. We believe that Darla has the capacity to steal anyone's heart with her playful spirit and unwavering love. She's a testament to the joy and companionship that rescue dogs can bring into a loving home.
If you're looking for a companion who will fill your days with laughter, playfulness, and unwavering loyalty, Darla is ready to embark on her next adventure with you. Come meet Darla and discover the joy of adopting a dog who will love you unconditionally, despite life's challenges.
MY IDEAL HOME: Darla is not just a playful pup; she's also a people-lover through and through. Wherever you go, expect Darla to be close behind, except when she's delightfully occupied with her licky mat, a favorite pastime of hers. She's remarkably well-adjusted when left alone, showing no signs of separation anxiety, though she has a mischievous streak—she's been known to chew up a few chargers and remotes when left unsupervised.
As with any young dog, Darla benefits greatly from a puppy-proofed home. She's curious and eager to explore, which means items like toilet paper rolls are fair game if left within reach.
Due to her condition and lively nature, Darla is best suited for a home with minimal or manageable stairs. A few steps are fine, especially if they're carpeted, but unsupervised access to stairs should be avoided to prevent accidents.
Darla thrives with continued training and guidance. Her eagerness to learn and please makes her a joy to work with, and ongoing training will help her reach her full potential as a well-mannered companion.
MY ENERGY LEVEL: Darla is a dynamic and spirited Kelpie who thrives on activity and mental engagement. As a breed known for its intelligence and high energy levels, Darla is not for the faint of heart!
Potential adopters should be prepared to dedicate time and effort to meet Darla's exercise and mental stimulation needs. A routine that includes regular physical activities and mental challenges will not only keep her physically fit but also mentally fulfilled.
MY SUITABILITY TO CHILDREN: Darla hasn't had a lot of exposure to children and due to her condition and activity level, teens and up are best suited for this girl.
MY SUITABILITY TO CATS AND DOGS: Darla has had a pretty traumatic past, she was found wandering the streets covered in bite wounds so she can be fearful / reactive around dogs she doesn't know. She is capable of making dog friends but is best as the only dog in the home. She hasn't met any cats whilst in care but given her high drive, we feel she is best in a home without them.
Medical notes
Darla has a condition called Cerebellar Hypoplasia which is a disease that denotes an inadequate development of the cerebellum, a section of the brainstem largely responsible for modulating motor impulses. Although there is no cure for CH, animals with cerebellar hypoplasia are not in any pain, have a normal life expectancy and with assistance, can go on to live a normal, happy life.

For Cats: https://form.jotform.co/92940837256870
For Dogs: https://form.jotform.co/80677377750872
Please use these links rather than the 'Enquire' button on the pet's PetRescue profile to streamline your enquiry.
Our foster carer will contact you when we receive your application to arrange a time for you to meet with their foster pet.
We want your adoption through Maggie's to be a good experience so we will occasionally suggest a different cat or dog that may suit your situation better and the needs of the individual pet.
All our pets leave for their new homes on a two-week trial. At the end of the trial, we will transfer the microchip into your name and provide you with the pets vet certificates. Once you receive the Certificate of Identification from council, your adoption will be complete.
Please consider, that a Maggie's Pet is a pet for Life, before adopting.
