Meet Layzel, a staff favourite with loads of potential…!
About: Layzel came in with two names (Layla & Hazel) & we weren’t really able to clarify which one was correct, so we did what anyone would do & merged the two together…
Layzel is a friendly & happy girl who is outgoing and playful. She is a very social girl who loves to interact with people, and she has her moments of pure excitement which is expected when you’re still young. Her confidence is growing every day & she is quite sweet, but her attention span is very short.
Layzel is fine for people who are first time dog owners, or those with experience. She is also suitable for any household as she is easy-going with an adaptable nature.
Ideal Home: Layzel is fine to live in a townhouse, house or on a farm/acreage, with a medium to large yard & high secure fencing.
As she loves spending time with people it would be a dream for Layzel’s new family to allow her access inside the home so she can spend as much time as possible with her family.
Family: Layzel is open to meet kids of any age and is fine to live with people who work full-time hours.
Furry Friends: Layzel is open to meet dogs. During her dog assessment she displayed puppy like behaviour as she bounced around with excitement. She play bowed and had loose body language and a very happy, wagging tail. She also met a dog that was not interested in being friends, the other dog was quite rude to Layzel but this did not phase her, she continued to be her happy, go-lucky self and still wanted to become friends.
As we cannot test, we are unsure how Layzel would go living with or meeting cats/pocket pets. This would be up to the discretion of her new owners.
Training & Development: Post-adoption training, such as training at home to cover basic commands/obedience and group classes to assist with her social skills around other dogs/people would be highly beneficial.
With further training & practise Layzel could be the type of dog you could take to a dog friendly café or social setting.
Layzel semi responds to her name, but she knows how to ‘sit’ but her short attentions span prevents her from learning more. You can see that she does want to learn more, but the world is far too exciting! Layzel loves food, especially devon, and she takes treats from your hand gently too. Layzel may jump up to say hello, she usually does this when meeting a new person.
We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.
Play: Layzel’s energy needs are medium to high, and she would benefit from exercise, play, or walks from 30-60mins per day.
Layzel walks well on a lead, but does pull to walk faster, but she is working on her leash manners. She is best walked on a martingale & have treats on hand to mark those good behaviours!
Layzel loves all toys, she loves to chase tennis balls, she will try to play with other toys all whilst carrying a toy in her mouth. She is very playful!
Staff Comments: Layzel is a sweetheart. She was very unsure and shy when she first arrived, but she has come out of her shell. She loves human interaction, pats, treats & playing with toys. She would make a great first dog for people who want to own a Shar Pei but lack breed experience. She is a great mix of cuddles & energy. She is Mel’s favourite girl.
Post Adoption Life: With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as seamless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories - most are left in the shelter by their owners. The information we have is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks may surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
