About Rosie
Look who is FINALLY ready for adoption!!
When Rosie came to us 3 months ago, she was in a bad way.
This poor little girl had found herself surrendered to the pound and it was clear to everyone that she desperately needed help.
Rosie’s main problem was her ears. She had obviously had a lifetime of untreated ear infections, leading to her ear canals becoming fused shut and her external ears becoming “cauliflowered” from the constant scratching and shaking.
The infection was trapped deep inside Rosie’s ears and with no way to get out, it just got worse and worse. Rosie spent her life shaking her head and scratching her ears, in an attempt to get some relief.
Immediately on arriving, Dr Trin set to work. Eager to find out what the infection was and the best antibiotic to start treatment with, a swab was gentle forced through into Rosie’s ear. It was then sent away, and weeks of high dose antibiotics and anti-inflammatory treatment followed.
Due to the fact that Rosie’s ear canals were shut, treatment options were limited to massive, invasive surgery but we needed to try to get the infection under control first.
The only way to give Rosie any sort of quality of life was for her to have a procedure known as “Zepps” in both of her ears.
This is a brutal and barbaric surgery and to need it done in both ears is a lot but Rosie is only 5 years old and has probably never known a life without pain. There was no choice but to proceed.
Zepps, also known as lateral ear canal resection, is not a surgery to be undertaken lightly. It is only used when all else fails but in Rosie’s case the only alternative she had was euthanasia. Not only is this surgery confronting, but it is also hugely expensive and has a long recovery period. Often (although not in Rosie’s case thankfully) it can result in deafness, but we believed that it was Rosies only chance.
In basic terms, this surgery involves opening up the vertical part of the ear (the inside) and opening it up to the outside and stitching it open. This allows any infection to drain and it allows air to flow through the ear and keep it nice and dry.
Although it can be a big decision to put a dog through this surgery, once Dr Trin got Rosie under anaesthetic, even she was shocked at what she found. Not only were Rosie’s ears completely sealed, they were full of infection, and they also had numerous polyps. Rosie’s ears were the worst she had ever seen!
Almost immediately Rosie was a different dog, but the habit of scratching and shaking was harder to fix. In fact, Rosie needed to stay in hospital for several weeks, until her stitches came out, to ensure that she didn’t cause herself any harm.
Once she went home to her foster family, Rosie was a different dog. She could hear, for the first time and she was pain free!
Now that Rosie is completely healed, she is ready to find her furever humans.
Rosie is a chunky monkey but she is a total lap dog! She will sit on your lap as much as you allow and she loves to snuggle up with you in bed too.
Rosie is great with other dogs, and she is a bit of a chatterbox, making her great company. She loves her food, and she isn’t fussy at all.
Rosie would love to have her humans home more often than not. She is housetrained and cuddly and will make the perfect best friend for someone looking for a furchild.
Rosie deserves to be loved and spoiled and pampered.
This girl is absolutely gorgeous, even with her mohawk hairstyle, which is the only visible reminder of her lifechanging surgery.
Rosie’s surgery may have cost us thousands of dollars but it is worth every cent to see her so happy and well.
All she needs now is a loving home.
