Meet Sumo, a big boy who is playful & smart...
About: Sumo is a big, boy with loads of personality. He is friendly and happy & quite outgoing. Curious by nature he loves to learn and interact. He is playful & social and can get a little excited when meeting new people, new dogs or venturing into to spaces. He just needs a little time to settle; its then you’ll see Sumo smarty pants shine through as he will dazzle you with his repertoire of tricks.
Sumo is best suited to someone who has owned dogs before; a person who has dog experience. He is suitable for any household environment all thanks to his happy-go-lucky nature. He would also a great choice for people who are active & like to spend time outdoors. We can see Sumo coming along for any & all adventures.
Ideal Home: Sumo is best to live in a house or on a farm/acreage, with a medium to large yard & high secure fencing.
Sumo loves sending time with people so having access to inside the home so that he can be with his new family would be great!
Family: Sumo is open to meet kids of any age, but his size needs to be factored in. When he plays, he plays like a puppy and he is sometimes unaware of his surroundings, so he may accidentally knock younger kids over. Sumo is also fine to live with people who work part-time hours.
Furry Friends: Sumo is open to meet dogs, during his dog assessment he showed us that he is very social and wants to play & interact with the other dog, but his size coupled with his play style can be a little too much sometimes for other dogs. We are going to work with him on desensitising him to other dogs whilst he remains in our care.
As we cannot test, we are unsure how Sumo would go living with or meeting cats/pocket pets. This would be up to the discretion of his new owners.
Training & Development: Sumo would also benefit from post-adoption training such as training at home to over basic commands/obedience & impulse control as well as group classes to assist him with his dog social skills, ensuring he learns correct etiquette & manners when meeting dogs.
With additional training Sumo could be the type of dog you could take to a dog friendly social setting, but he needs training in being calm & impulse control.
Sumo knows his name, he also knows ‘sit’ & ‘down’. Sumo loves treats, but he can sometimes be a little bit snatchy when taking them.
We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.
Play: Sumo has high energy needs, so he would benefit from play, exercise or walks from 30-60mins plus a day.
Sumo walks well on a lead but is strong & can pull. He is best walked with a martingale. Sumo also loves soft toys.
Staff Comments: Sumo us a big cuddle bug, but is a little bit dopey & doesn't know how big he is! We just love this about him though. Sumo thinks that everything in just the best thing ever! He can sometimes jump up on you, which people should be aware of as he is 35kgs!
Post-Adoption Life: With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as seamless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories - most are left in the shelter by their owners. The information we have is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks may surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
