About Josie
Who are we looking for, for young German Shepherd Josie?
Well, someone with the least amount of commotion in their household as possible. Maybe a single person or couple who lead a quiet life? In saying that, there's no need to tiptoe around. Josie is fine with the vacuum and common sounds. She will take a few days to settle in to a new home.
Josie does generally bond better with females but that's not to dismiss any eligible men. Probably best to not have children running around all the time near Josie.
Josie wants to be with you, all the time. Not locked away anywhere, not left alone in the backyard for hours, she wants to be there in your shadow, inside, outside, wherever that may be. Perhaps someone who works from home or is retired?
Josie walks well on a lead and sits when instructed but she is still a puppy, so she will need a confident handler, one who can be firm but friendly and teach her the right ways.
A calm approach is necessary. Speaking to Josie, going slow with new actions.
Even when Josie is doing undesirable behaviours, its important to remain positive and redirect her in a friendly manner.
Josie is VERY smart and she doesn't forget kindness. She will warm quickly to anyone who is friendly toward her. So it goes without saying that she doesn't forget those who aren't friendly to her either.
Josie does not need dog park visits, car rides or beach days. She will likely be too scared in public.
A yard with secure fencing is all that Josie needs to explore. Small acreage would be ideal for Josie with a secure house yard to venture into by herself but she would be fine in a normal house yard.
A walk each day if you have some property would be amazing but not out of the property. She learns her space and does love to go for a run. She can see a little bit but mostly "sees" with her keen sense of smell and unreal listening abilities.
Josie is friendly with all the animals we have seen her with, (though she couldn't understand why the lamb was not playing). Josie is not very good at knowing how to play with other dogs and although she does not appear to have issues with dogs, we think she may be best suited to no other dogs to avoid any mishaps. Some dogs can be intimidated by her and she won't tolerate bouncy dogs. Perhaps if any, a very calm dog for company. She is fine with non reactive cats.
She gets along well with her foster family dogs and cats, who really couldn't care less about her(!) And that suits Josie well, even if she doesn't realise it.
Josie will be happy with a simple life. She lays at your feet and is not a bother. She doesn't need constant attention, more just companionship.
You will be surprised how well she gets around.
Routine and stability will be beneficial for her and of course heaps of love and reassurance.
So, do you know that person we are looking for?
Please send us a private message if you are after any further info.
Medical notes
Josie is a sweet and intelligent dog. A playful pup on the inside.
Josie is mostly blind, having been diagnosed with Retina Dysplasia (underdeveloped retina from birth) and unfortunately there isn't any treatment for that. Her sight will not restore but it should not get any worse either, at least for the close future.
She is not in any pain and does manage herself well.
She requires a calm, patient, and understanding environment to help her feel secure. Hustle and bustle and unfamiliar surroundings could trigger a fear response or defensive reaction.
Josie can be wary of strangers and new situations due to her inability to see.
Positive reinforcement and gradual introductions are crucial to build her confidence.
Josie will need a quiet, stable home with minimal unexpected loud noises or sudden movements. A small fenced yard would be beneficial for her safety and exploration.
Josie does not mind being by herself outside lounging in the sun, she travels well in the car and also loves a good cuddle. Josie thrives on praises and will settle quickly with a pat.
Josie needs an experienced dog owner who understands the needs of a blind dog and is committed to her training and socialisation.
Young children may unintentionally startle Josie, leading to fear-based reactions and for this reason we would suggest an adult/s only household.
Although Josie is fine with other dogs, we believe she would best suit being an only dog, to decrease chances of startles and injuries from her inability to see.
She has not been tested with cats but is not concerned with any other animals and we don't think she'd have a problem living with one.
A true German Shepherd, Josie will need a firm but friendly training approach.
A calm voice and positive reinforcement techniques, such as treats and praise, will help Josie learn new commands and build trust with her owner.
Gradually exposing Josie to new experiences in a controlled manner can help reduce her fear responses over time.
Consulting a professional dog trainer, especially one experienced with blind dogs, can also provide specialised guidance and support.
Blindness Management - You would need to ensure Josie's environment is safe and predictable. She can navigate her way around but may bump in to newly placed objects that she is not familiar with. You would need to avoid rearranging furniture frequently, and provide tactile cues to help her navigate.
Josie is a wonderful dog who has a lot of love to give. With the right family, she can thrive and become a loyal and affectionate companion. If you have the patience, experience, and love to offer, Josie could be the perfect addition to your home.

After this time, and knowing that both the family and pet are happy together, the adoption will be finalized.
