Meet Art, a happy boy with a lot of love to give...

About: Art is a little bit shy when you first meet him, but he quickly transforms into a friendly and playful guy. He is also smart & loves to engage with his handlers, maybe a little too much, which we will touch base on further down.

Art is best suited with someone who has owned dogs before. He is suitable to live in any household, but we have a sneaking suspicion that he may prefer a quieter home rather than a loud one. He would also be fine for active people who spend time outdoors as he’s quite an explorer himself and would love to go on adventures with you.

Art is a lovely boy who was quite shy when he first came in, but he has found a bit of confidence & is growing & learning each & every day.

Ideal Home: Art is best to live in a house or on a farm/acreage, with a medium to large yard & high secure fencing. He loves people and would love to be able to spend time inside the home with his new family.

Family: Art is open to meet kids from 10 years & up. Reason for this is because he can be a little mouthy when he plays but he is smart enough that this behaviour can be rectified. He is also a little too ‘friendly’ when he says hello to *some* people, this is usually shown by him giving x-rated hugs – again he is smart enough that this behaviour can be rectified, and he has already shown improvement.

Art is suitable to live with people who work full time hours.

Furry Friends: For now, we would say that Art is best to be the only dog in the home BUT he is a social dog! He just needs some further desensitising to other dogs & we will be working with him on his journey. During his dog assessment, as soon as he saw another dog, he did not know what to do or how to act but as the assessment went on he grew in confidence, relaxed substantially and really wanted to interact, he just doesn’t possess the skill set yet to interact appropriately.

As we cannot test, we are unsure how Art would go living with cats/pocket pets. This would be up to the discretion of his new owners.

Training & Development: Art would also benefit from post-adoption training, such as training at home to cover basic commands & obedience, as well as group classes to continue his dog socialisation & desensitisation. He is food motivated & takes treats gently from your hand and responds well to training where treats are involved - see his third photo for his 'focus' face.

Art is still learning his name, but he knows ‘sit’ and some loose leash walking & knows a basic ‘heel’ too.

We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.

Play: Art's energy needs are medium & he would benefit from exercise, walks or play time from 20-30mins to keep him happy & in tip top shape. Art loves walking but can sometimes pull, so he is best walked with a martingale.

Art also loves toys, especially rope toys & tennis balls.

Post-Adoption Life: With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as seamless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories - most are left in the shelter by their owners. The information we have is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks may surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
