Meet Toby,
About: Toby is a gentle giant who is agreeable, friendly and happy. He is a smart boy with an outgoing & confident outlook on life. Curious by nature, he is excited about new things & new people and is a playfully social dog with a lot of love to give, however he can be a tad bit stubborn at times… He makes up for that with his affection for his handlers as he loves to engage with anyone he meets & wears a permanently smile on his handsome little face.
Toby is best suited to someone who has owned dogs before & those who have dog ownership experience, and due to his adaptable nature, Toby is suitable for any home & is a good choice for people who live active lifestyles as he would happily accompany you on any adventure you choose to go on.
Ideal Home: Toby would be best suited to live in a house or on a farm/acreage, with a large yard & high secure fencing.
Toby loves being around people, so having access to inside the home is important to him so that he can feel like part of the family.
Family: Toby is open to meet kids from 5 years & up; reason for this is that Toby had be a tad bit unsure in new environments and needs a few minutes to sus out the new digs before he shows you his confident side.
Toby is suitable to live with people who work full-time hours.
Furry Friends: For now we would say that Toby is dog selective, during his dog assessment he showed signs that he wanted to interact but was a little unsure on how to do so appropriately with the other dog. This is probably something that he missed out on in his previous home, so staff are going to help him on his journey of socialisation & assist with his desensitisation to other dogs & re-assess as we go.
Based on what we could find about Toby’s previous home, it looks like he has previously lived with cats, but it is important to note that a) we cannot test that in our current environment & b) the info we found may be out of date. Introducing Toby to cats would be up to the discretion of his new owners.
Training & Development: Post-adoption training, such as training at home to cover basic commands & obedience, and group classes to increase his social skills around other dogs would be beneficial. Toby is a smart boy who wants to work.
Toby, once settled, could be the type of dog that you could take to a dog friendly café or social setting.
Toby is food motivated & loves treats and takes them gently from your hand. Treats are a good tool to use during training.
We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.
Play: Toby has high energy needs and would benefit from exercise, walks, or play from 20-60mins per day. Toby walks well on a lead & can be walked on any apparatus, we rarely have him pulling on the lead.
He is yet to show interest in toys, for now he prefers personal play with his handlers. He knows his name and also knows how to ‘sit’, ‘stay’, ‘down’ & ‘shake’.
Post-Adoption Life: With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as seamless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories - most are left in the shelter by their owners. The information we have is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks may surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
