Meet Vader, a sweet & engaging girl, ready for her new home…
About: Vader is a sweet, gentle, and sensitive girl. She’s very agreeable and friendly in nature. A very smart dog who is curious and engaging with her handlers but at times can lack confidence.
Vader is best suited to someone who has owned dogs before or those who have breed specific experience.
She is best suited in a calm & quiet home and is a great candidate for people who live & lead an active lifestyle as she would love to accompany you on bush walks, hikes, bike rides & camping trips.
Ideal Home: Vader is best suited to live in a house or on a farm/acerage, with a large yard & high secure fencing.
Vader loves to engage with her human friends and because of this, time spent inside the home as well as outside would be very important to her so that she can feel like apart of the family.
Family: Vader is open to meet kids of any age & is also suitable to live with people who work part-time hours.
Furry Friends: We do know that Vader previously lived with other dogs, however her dog assessment suggested that she is dog selective. During her assessment she acknowledges that the other dog is there but showed some displacement behaviour which indicated that she was stressed during the interaction. She is easily managed but does need some confidence building around other dogs. Staff are allowing her to interact with other dogs at the ACF in short stints to allow her to build confidence.
As we cannot test, we are unsure how Vader would go living with or meeting cats/pocket pets. This would be up to the discretion of her new owners.
Training & Development: Vader would benefit from post-adoption training, such a training at home to cover basic obedience and group classes to boost her confidence around other dogs in a safe environment.
Vader may bark as people passing by, which is a shepherd trait. She is also food motivated & takes treats gently from your hand - being smart, Vader loves to learn & likes to 'work' so treats are a great tool to us during training sessions.
Although she is still learning her name, she does know commands such as ‘sit’, ‘down’ and is also learning how to 'heel'.
We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.
Play: Vader’s energy needs are medium to high, and she would benefit from exercise, walks, or play time from 30-60mins a day.
Vader walks well on a lead and is best walked on a collar & lead – additional training with walking should also be invested in, especially loose leash training.
Vader is not overly excited when it comes to toys, but she does like soft ones if she’s in a playful mood.
Post-Adoption Life: With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as seamless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories - most are left in the shelter by their owners. The information we have is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks may surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
