Meet Dex, Dex is really named Rex, but as we already have a Rex a the shelter (& to lessen the confusion) this Rex will be referred to as Dex.
About: Dex is a gentle boy who is comfortable, friendly & happy. He’s confident in himself & his surrounds and is an excitable, playful & social dog who is also very affectionate.
Dex is suitable for first time dog owners, or those with experience. Due to his adaptable nature, he is also suitable for any household and a great candidate for people or families who are active & outdoorsy as he loves being outside & exploring.
Ideal Home: Dex is best suited to living in a house or farm/acreage, with a medium to large yard & high secure fencing.
Dex loves spending time with people so it would be great if he could spend some time inside the home with his new family.
Family: Dex is a big softy & is open to meet kids of any age. He is also easy-going and is great fit for people or families that work full-time or part-time.
Furry Friends: We know from his previous owners that Dex has previously lived with dogs before. During his dog assessment Dex showed that he was happy to interact with the other dog & displayed social, respectful behaviour.
Dex also lived with cats in his previous home, but in this environment we cannot really test this, so while this information has been provided it will be up to his new owners to ensure that Dex is integrated into the home properly.
As always, we recommend that when introducing your new & existing animals that it is done slowly & that each animals boundaries are respected.
Training & Development: Dex would benefit from post-adoption training such as training as home to keep his basic commands sharp as well as group classes to keep his social skills equally as sharp. Group classes would also be a good idea to keep his already social skills sharp!
With a little more training Dex could be the type of dog that you can take to a dog park, dog friendly café or social setting.
Dex loves treats & is food motivated, and he always takes them gently from your hand. His love of treats is also ideal for his continued training. Dex may jump up to say hi when you first meet him, but we are working on this behaviour.
Dex knows his name (Rex), and also knows commands such as ‘sit’ & ‘shake’.
We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.
Play: Dex has medium energy requirements, and he would benefit from exercise, play or walks from 30-60mins a day to keep himself physically & mentally fit & healthy.
Dex walks well on a lead but can be a little strong, so he is best walked on a martingale and lead.
He loves toys, especially soft, plush stuffed toys!
Post-Adoption Life: With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as seamless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories - most are left in the shelter by their owners. The information we have is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks may surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
