Meet Baloo, your real-life Jungle Book character…
About: Baloo is a gentle boy who is friendly, happy, and social. A playful & loveable guy who is excited about life and all that it has to offer. He’s very affectionate but can be a little nervous at times…
Baloo is suitable for first time owners, or those with experience and thanks to his adaptable nature he is also suitable for any household and is also a lovely choice for people/families who love to spend time outdoors. Baloo loves to walk & explore the world around him.
Ideal Home: Baloo isn’t fussy when it comes to the type of home he needs either, anything from a townhouse, house or a farm/acerage would be fine, as long as the yard is medium to large in size with high, secure fencing.
Baloo loves being around people, so having access to inside the home would be ideal so that he can feel like a part of the family.
Family: Baloo is open to meet kids from 8 years and up. Although Baloo is a big softy whose lovely, sweet & gentle, he is sometimes a little too soft at times & loud noises can startle him, so older kids, or kids in general who are on the quieter side, would be ideal.
Baloo is also suitable for people who work part-time or work from home. Being around people makes him feel safe and we have a sneaking suspicion that Baloo may get a little anxious when left alone (again, this is suspected, not confirmed).
Furry Friends: Baloo's dog assessment revealed that he is dog neutral. He's fine to be around dogs, and equally fine not being around them. Baloo has a few confidence kinks that need to be ironed out first before we fully commit to saying that he is dog social. One of Baloo's biggest bugbears is having anything around his neck (whether it be a collar or a slip lead) and he was very focused on how this made him feel during the assessment, we will touch base on this further down & may also look to re-do his dog assessment too.
As we cannot test, we are unsure how Baloo would go living with or meeting cats/pocket pets. This would be up to the direction of his new owners.
Training & Development: Baloo would benefit from post-adoption training such as training at home so that his basic commands stay sharp, and group classes to boost his confidence. Training with a professional, or even engaging with a professional for guidance as to his reservations for collars/slip leads may also provide to be useful. It’s important to note that Baloo tends to shy away from collars & leads when he first sees them, this could be from past trauma in his original home, so to benefit him & his new family it is best to have guidance from a professional & to walk him on a harness & lead as he appears much for comfortable.
Crate training would be a good avenue to go down too – it will give Baloo a safe space to call his own should he need to decompress from the world.
Baloo loves treats, especially meatballs, and he takes them gently from your hand when he’s offered them. He is still learning his name, but he knows how to ‘sit’ & ‘shake’ and just needs a little training on how to focus during training but he does want to work & learn more.
We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.
Play: Baloo's energy needs are medium – we won’t lie here, he can sometimes be super energetic, but this is usually short lived – so he would be fine with exercise, walks or play time from 20-60mins a day to keep his mind happy & his body fit & healthy. Baloo also loves tennis balls, stuffed toys & anything that squeaks.
Post-Adoption Life: With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as seamless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories - most are left in the shelter by their owners. The information we have is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks may surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
Medical notes
No known pre-existing conditions.
