Meet Rocky, the boy with lots of energy & loads of personality…
About: Rocky is best suited with a person or family who not only has experience with dog ownership, but experience with owning Jack Russell Terriers.
He would be suitable for any kind of household & would be a perfect fit for people who enjoy the great outdoors as he would love to accompany you on walks, hikes, camping, the list goes on…
Ideal Home: Rocky is suitable for any property type or dwelling, yard size doesn’t matter either, as long as the yard is fully fenced & secure.
Family: Rocky is open to meeting kids from 13yrs & up. Reason for this is that Rocky displays some resource guarding when it comes to mealtime. Although the behaviour is mild & staff are taking steps to counteract this, it is something that should be managed from the moment he comes home as it can escalate. We feel that older kids will be less likely to try to get involved with Rocky during mealtime.
He is also suitable for people who work part-time or full-time hours.
Furry Friends: Rocky must be the only dog in the home. During his dog assessment it became quite clear very quickly that this little guy is not interested in making dog friends at all. This is probably because he was not socialised in his previous home.
As we cannot test, we are unsure how Rocky would go living with or meeting cats/pocket pets. This would be up to the discretion of his new owners. But based on his breed & his reaction to other dogs, he is probably best to be the only animal in the household.
Training & Development: Rocky is a smart boy who loves to learn. He would benefit from post-adoption training, such as training at home to cover your basic commands as well as with a professional to assist with his resource guarding.
Rocky is food motivated & loves treats. He is also willing to work for treats too. He can sometimes be snatchy when taking them, but also can take them gently, so he is just learning his manners.
He knows his name & also knows how to ‘sit’ but can get excited & lose focus.
We always recommend post-adoption training whether it be at home or with a professional. Training doesn’t have to be a chore – it can be a fun experience for you both, it doesn’t have to take long & is a great way for you to bond with your new pal.
Play: Being the smallest working breed as well as being young Rocky has a lot of energy to burn; daily walks, play time or exercise is a must for this boy to keep his mind satisfied & his body in tip top shape. Anything from 30-60mins per day will be ideal.
Rocky likes any kind of toy that he can chase! Rocky is still learning how to walk on a lead so training in this department will benefit him greatly. He is best walked on a harness & lead or a martingale & lead.
Post-Adoption Life: With all animals it’s important to understand that going into a new environment with new people may not be as seamless as we want it to be. It’s important to know that these animals have unknown histories - most are left in the shelter by their owners. The information we have is from observing the animal’s behaviours & reactions to certain stimuli whilst in our care. Adopted animals can take up to 3 months to properly decompress from post-shelter life & a lot of behaviours & quirks may surface during this time. All that we ask is that their new owners have an open mind & are patient.
