About Gary - your best friend
A Ray of Sunshine in Feline Form ☀️
Are you on the hunt for a cuddly companion with a heart of gold? Look no further than Gary! This delightful Ginger Ninja may have FIV, but it does not diminish his loving spirit. Do not let this minor detail hold you back – Gary is utterly unique!
Forget expensive therapy; Gary is the ultimate four-legged therapist! Down in the dumps? He is on standby for cuddles and always ready to lend an ear (or paw!). His warm nature extends to everyone, whether they are humans or fellow felines.
His wish list is simple yet heartfelt:
* Unlimited cuddles and chin scratches
* A loving, patient home to call his own
* A home without dogs would be ideal, please!
Already a pet parent to an FIV+ furball? Fantastic! Gary is all for gentle meet-and-greets and aspires to be the perfect nap buddy.
Do not have an FIV+ pet? That is okay. Gary's ready to shower you with all his love.
For Gary, safety is key; he thrives in the secure comfort of an indoor setting. He will be your loyal companion by the window, keeping your home cozy throughout the seasons.
Gary's dream is simple: a loving home where he can enjoy a soft bed, a window to gaze out of, and caring humans to share his love with. Could this be with your family?
Ready for a lifetime of love and purrs? Gary is eagerly waiting to meet his forever best friend!
💕 ABOUT OUR ORGANISATION
As well as working with dogs, Sunny Days runs Victoria's only specialised stray cat rehab facility on a rural property in Avalon, Vic. Our rehab centre operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is in constant demand due to the sheer number of cats born wild, and dogs no longer wanted.
Despite this demand, we have no source of ongoing funding. Unlike public pounds who enter into contracts with local councils to be the facility responsible for housing lost animals in that municipality, volunteer-run pounds like ours do not have the option to partner with a government organisation and have the running of the shelter funded - we are left to fund our work through our own pockets and community donations. Please see below for lots of secure ways you can donate to support our work.
💕 HOW YOU CAN HELP
We receive adoption fees, however our animals are adopted out less frequently than other shelters and rescue organisations as our animals are with us for extended periods of rehabilitation. We rely on donations not only to help with immediate vet care but also to keep them fed, parasite treated, vaccinated regularly and treated for illness or injury fir the period they are with us which is often years. You can donate by clicking the pink DONATE button on this page or via the options below. Thankyou so much.
💕 TAX DEDUCTIBLE DONATION OPTIONS
You can help us rescue, rehabilitate and rehome the animals we take in by:

💕 OUR WORK WITH CATS
We take in full cat colonies, pregnant and nursing mothers, ophan kittens, FIV positive cats, and sick or injured cats. Cats are humanely trapped after being identified as un-owned and we support them through full rehabilitation from wild and unhandleable to fully domesticated. We don't give them deadlines to be socialised by or they'll be euthanised, we provide sanctuary for them for as long as they need.
💕 OUR WORK WITH DOGS
We take in dogs from community surrenders, booked for unnecessary euthanasia by owners but vets have intervened and contacted us, or rescued from pound death row. Most of our dogs are with us for extended periods to ensure we know them really well before putting them up for adoption, and have been assessed by professional dog trainers if not worked with extensively. We provide full discretion with adopters about dogs' health and behaviour, unlimited 24 hour support, and a month long fully refundable adoption trial to ensure dogs are given the best chance to integrate into new homes, families and lifestyles.
We also offer a lifetime guarantee to take any of our adopted cats and dogs back should something happen and their adopters are no longer able to care for them.

The easiest way to understand Feline Immunodeficiency Virus is to think of HIV in humans - it causes a weakened immune system. The immune system of cats with FIV needs a bit of help to fight general illnesses. We give them this help through good nutrition, low stress, inside living and regular vet checks.
What is FIV:
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus means the immune system of the cat is not as strong as a non FIV cat’s, and that general illnesses will be a little tougher for the cat’s body to fight. Some FIV cats go on to live a normal, full life with few health concerns, however the majority do have a bit of a shorter life due to the wear and tear on their body. We think of FIV cats as very special as they aren’t aware they have FIV so behave just like any other cat, but need a bit of extra love and focus from us, like special needs animals do. For this reason adopting an FIV cat is hugely rewarding, there’s something about giving them that special love that brings out the best in us humans.
How cats contract FIV:
FIV is usually contracted through deep bite wounds when cats fight on the street. There is a small number of females infected through mating and a small number of kittens who contract it from mum, but generally it's a male cat condition. FIV cats should be kept indoors permanently to keep them healthy and avoid them getting into fights and passing on the condition, or being bitten and having to fight a resulting infection.
Is it contagious to other animals or humans?
FIV is a feline disease only, it cannot be passed other species. Most FIV adults who come into our care are gentle, cat friendly and submissive. We believe they contract FIV from being bullied by more dominant roaming cats, NOT from being aggressive - FIV does NOT equal aggression.
FIV is transferred by deep bite wounds where the FIV cat's saliva and the other cat's blood mix, which means there has to be a serious fight for transference to happen. Another possible method of transmission is if the FIV cat grooms a non FIV cat quite alot, though this doesn't appear to happen between mothers and kittens so is variable.
Without fights (and possibly alot of grooming) most FIV cats live with non-FIV cats without passing on the condition. If the FIV cat you’re interested in adopting is cat friendly and would never initiate a fight with your existing cat, which we will be able to tell you, and if your cat is used to others and will happily accept a newbie in your home, they'll be absolutely fine together :)
Is it more expensive to own an FIV positive cat?
A little, but not more than a good owner would invest in their cat anyway. FIV cats need a good brand of quality food and these can be purchased in bulk online, lowering the cost substantially. We also recommend 6-monthly vet checks which can either entail a simple examination to check the cat’s overall health, or a blood test to check whether the FIV has progressed to any further state in the body.
There are some supplements that can be purchased online and may assist in immune boosting. Overall owning an FIV cat should not cost more than adopting a kitten who will need having regular vet checks and vaccinations.
