About Scarlett Elphinstone
TO APPLY FOR ADOPTION PLEASE SEND IN APPLICATION FORM AVAILABLE BELOW:

Meet Scarlett who is a super affectionate, people-orientated black beauty. She wants to be with her humans, and has a very soft temperament. This little girl positively adores company, so makes a loving and cuddly companion. A very attentive dog and super eager to please.
Scarlett’s clipped, glossy black coat, pendulum ears and liquid brown eyes are hard to resist. She loves to peer into my eyes; so hard to resist looking into hers. She is a small, compact/chunky Cocker Spaniel.
Very people oriented and a loving, soft nature, often anxious, but this will improve with confidence and exposure to the world. She is an extreme cuddle bug who wants lots of attention. This means she will suit someone who is at home a lot of the time and prepared to give her heaps of attention.
As Scarlett has been a breeding girl, living all of her life in a run, her experience of the world is limited. Her present socialisation and training have been going exceedingly well as noisy trains, bicycles zipping by and people passing don’t bother her.
Scarlett can get very anxious when people she knows are not in sight, therefore her separation anxiety when left alone can result in howling or barking. But her confidence is building exceedingly well. Can now be left maybe for 4 hours and seems quite okay when I return. No destructive behaviour. Prefers to be left inside the house with access to outside.
A home with mature adults would allow her to have lots of people to rely on as household members come and go. Plus a calm environment will allow Scarlett to feel safe at home and with the world in general.
Considering that she previously wasn’t taken out on a lead, she walks out incredibly well on a loose lead. Can have a very enjoyable outing with her. Generally, doesn’t pull much at all. Being a spaniel, she often sniffs the ground as she explores the great big world. She will need further training on lead and with basic commands, but wants to please the ones she loves and is very receptive to being shown new tasks to learn. Sometimes sit on command.
Because of her unfamiliarity with the world she can get very upset by seeing people or objects that don’t fit into her experience – for example people in big hoodies.
Previously an outside girl but is getting very competent going outside to toilet. She is very smart, learns quickly and now confidently uses the doggy door. Just not keen to get her fluffy paws wet when it has been raining!
She travels very well in the car now that I have taken her on several rides. Keen to get in – waits to be lifted. Can easily hold her in your arms as quite relaxed about that.
She does not enjoy the presence of cats.
Wants to see other dogs but at this stage is very reactive on leash. Her “critical distance” is narrowing to the point that she has been to two cafes and been sitting not far from other dogs, but coping with the initial surprise, then relaxing. Continuing work to be done by an experienced handler to allow her to learn how to socialise with other dogs (practicing with a non-reactive dog).
She will need a backyard and ideally two 20-30 min walks a day. She relaxes happily in her soft bed on the floor in the bedroom and now sleeps through the night. Doesn’t jump on the human bed, but maybe will try sometimes.
Scarlett is a loving, beautiful natured, friendly girl who is a super little dog. She does have separation anxiety which with patience and understanding will improve in time. She likes nothing better than to come up for cuddles and show affection.
Scarlett is currently living as an only dog and this would be best suited to her.
Scarlett is a beautiful little soul, who with her person will shine through to be the best girl you could want.

All our dogs are desexed, C5 vaccinated with intranasal, microchipped, wormed, and flea treated. All necessary vetwork such as dentals, surgery, eye treatment are also carried out. We are no longer heartworm testing as we have not had one positive test since we began in 2006. If a dog comes to us on heartworm treatment this is continued.

Adoption details
We are a community fostercare network, not a shelter, and our dogs and cats are cared for in private homes. Note that we are very careful where we rehome our dogs and cats and we have an intensive process. If you want a quick turnaround we are not the group for you. If you seem like a good match for the dog of your choice we will organise a telephone chat, a meet and greet and a property check. We offer free assistance for six weeks for any issues, a lifetime takeback policy with full refund of the adoption fee, and will always be available to offer advice.
We care for our dogs and cats and we want you to as well. We know that genuine applicants have no trouble with this process and understand that if we refuse you a dog or cat, it is because you are not the best match for that pet.
Our commitment to the dogs and cats in our care is total and we treat each one as if we are passing on a family pet. This may not suit you so we point out that there are equally great dogs and cats available in pounds, shelters and with other rescue groups.

Commonly asked questions and their answers are provided when you email us. We look forward to receiving your application.
