Hey there, Ganoush here. I'm a sweet, but timid cat just now so when I come home with you would you mind if I started my journey with you in a safe space in your home = somewhere quiet and restful. That will give me time to adjust to my new surroundings and to allow me time to settle before exploring the rest of the house.
It's recommended that my adoptive family is patient and understanding, and able to recognize that I'll be timid going into a new environment and may take a little while to settle in before I show my true self! Older kids in the family is preferrable to littlies (they may not recognise or understand basic cat body language and may not know to give me space). Nevertheless, with that all said, I'm a very social lady with cats and I've been known to love to go up to them and bunting into them. Anyhow, with gentle passive interactions with me I will slowly come out of my shell and you'll see my sweet and gentle nature.
