About Axel and Ruby Elphinstone
TO APPLY FOR ADOPTION PLEASE SEND IN APPLICATION FORM AVAILABLE BELOW:
https://www.victoriandogrescue.org.au/about-vicdrg/adoption-and-foster-application-forms.html/
Axel and Ruby are a friendly and sometimes excitable pair, who are looking for a new home together or as solo pups due to a change in their beloved carers’ circumstances. These two have been well-loved throughout their lives and are hoping for a new home where they can enjoy time with their people, a chance to regularly sniff the roses, and comfy beds to rest their mature paws. They are not good with cats.
Axel is a happy chap, who enjoys a good chew on his bone, likes other dogs and loves people. He is house trained but has been living outside for some time so may need some patient reminders about expected behaviour when he moves to his new digs. Axel sleeps well through the night, travels happily in the car, and can cope with some alone time, as long as he has regular exercise and a chance to be with his pack when they are around. Like many of his people, Axel is afraid of thunderstorms and would prefer some reassurance and company when they are rumbling. Axel gets on pretty well with other dogs and has lived happily with Ruby and another dog in the past. He prefers to be in charge among the dogs at home, so would suit living on his own, with Ruby, or with another relaxed female dog. Axel gets a bit excited when greeting new people and pups, but settles quickly and responds to his carers when asked. He is showing some of the stiffness of his years but is happy and active and should remain so with attention to his needs. Axel can be a bit protective of his bones (his precious) so should be separated from other dogs and small people when he is eating.
Axel will do well in a range of (cat-free) homes where he has human and/or canine company. He has not been getting a great deal of exercise or contact beyond Ruby in recent times and will benefit from some engagement activities and lead training with his people to help him brush up on doggy etiquette. Axel’s friendly and enthusiastic nature should make this pretty easy and mutually rewarding. Axel understands modern life and will be okay if his people need to go out for work or play, provided he has a doggy friend or problem-solving games and toys to keep him busy. Axel is new into our care and we will update his profile as we get to know him better.
Ruby is a sweet and slightly shy pup, who is very affectionate once she has overcome her initial reserve. She is a gentle girl but has some spark and enjoys interacting with other friendly dogs. She is house trained but has been living outside for some time so may need some patient reminders about expected behaviour when she moves to her new digs. Ruby sleeps well through the night, travels happily in the car, and can cope with some alone time, as long as she has regular exercise and a chance to be with her pack when they are around. Ruby is a bit scared of water, and gets sooky when it’s time for a bath. Ruby has lived happily with Axel and another dog in the past. She is happy fitting into the pack, so would suit being a solo dog, or living with Ruby or with another frinedly dog. Ruby pulls initially on lead but settles fairly well and is fine passing other dogs when out and about. She is showing some of the stiffness of her years but is happy and active and should remain so with attention to her needs.
Ruby will do well in a range of (cat-free) homes where she has human and/or canine company. She has not been getting a great deal of exercise or contact beyond Axel in recent times and will benefit from some engagement activities and lead training with her people to build her confidence and remind her of expectations. She is responsive to her people so this should be pretty easy. Ruby will be okay if her people need to go out for work or play, provided she has a doggy friend or problem-solving games and toys to keep her busy. Ruby is new into our care and we will update her profile as we get to know her better.

All our dogs are desexed, C5 vaccinated with intranasal, microchipped, wormed, and flea treated. All necessary vetwork such as dentals, surgery, eye treatment are also carried out. We are no longer heartworm testing as we have not had one positive test since we began in 2006. If a dog comes to us on heartworm treatment this is continued.

Adoption details
We are a community fostercare network, not a shelter, and our dogs and cats are cared for in private homes. Note that we are very careful where we rehome our dogs and cats and we have an intensive process. If you want a quick turnaround we are not the group for you. If you seem like a good match for the dog of your choice we will organise a telephone chat, a meet and greet and a property check. We offer free assistance for six weeks for any issues, a lifetime takeback policy with full refund of the adoption fee, and will always be available to offer advice.
We care for our dogs and cats and we want you to as well. We know that genuine applicants have no trouble with this process and understand that if we refuse you a dog or cat, it is because you are not the best match for that pet.
Our commitment to the dogs and cats in our care is total and we treat each one as if we are passing on a family pet. This may not suit you so we point out that there are equally great dogs and cats available in pounds, shelters and with other rescue groups.
