About Barkley
Barkley is an amazing dog who wins over everyone that meets him. He is the happiest and most friendly dog that you can meet. He loves accompanying his foster carers out and about to markets, shows, cafes, pubs, beaches, parks – literally anywhere! Barkley is confident in all types of situations and is not fazed by new things. At home, he has the skill of being able to find the comfiest spot for a nap. And besides playtime, his favourite part of the day is bedtime and morning time cuddles with his people. Barkley has a wonderful temperament and is going to be an amazing addition to his new home.
Barkley is a purebred short-haired Fox Terrier (both of his parents were papered purebreds). He currently weighs approximately 10kg and has the typical traits of the breed. Barkley is very intelligent and loves to use his brain. He is so much fun to train and is willing to please. In terms of obedience, he can sit, drop, spin, sit pretty and wait for his food. He walks quite well on the lead and his recall is pretty good unless there is something like birds to go off chasing. Unlike his name, Barkley does not bark often but will howl when left alone for the first little bit before he settles. He is toilet trained and travels well in the car so loves to come along for the fun wherever you are going.
Barkley is a total social butterfly around other dogs and is always the friendliest dog in the dog park. He loves to play chasies, tug or rumbles with his doggy friends. True to breed, he is a very active dog and is happiest when he gets about 4 hours of stimulation a day, whether that be exercise, playdates, outings and/or mental stimulation. Barkley is not a lap dog who will be satisfied with a quick lap around the block or just playing with the other dog at home – he requires more than that, making him best suited to an active household where multiple people are interested in doing things with him on a daily basis.
Barkley has always lived as an only dog but definitely needs a home where he can get regular, if not daily, play with doggy friends. He would also be able to live with another suitable dog in the home. This dog would need to also be quite playful in nature and already be fully trained so that they can be a good role model for Barkley. His new owners would also need to be willing to teach Barkley when to stop playing if he is going to be living full time with another dog. As his interactions with other dogs in life has only been to play, he doesn’t understand that playtime should end and will not stop playing unless someone intervenes. In a multi-dog household, his new owners would need to be willing to utilise management strategies and training techniques to educate Barkley on what is appropriate.
We are looking for a dog experienced home for Barkley where he will be an integral member of the family. Someone with Fox Terrier or similar breed experience will be looked upon highly; however, any home with previous dog experience that can provide the appropriate activity levels for Barkley will be considered. We will be looking for a home where someone is home more often than not to give Barkley plenty of attention. He should be allowed inside the home to be with the family and will need a warm comfy bed inside to sleep on at night. Barkley can be a bit nosy with his big nose, so his new owners will need to be willing to ensure he isn’t able to get anything he shouldn’t as he likes opening little packages to see what is inside. Instead he should be given interactive activities like treats in egg cartons or hidden treats to sniff out in order to give his brain a job.
Barkley is very friendly with everyone so is suitable to live with dog savvy children. He will make a great playmate as he likes to play with toys and fetch a ball but he may still jump up a little if excited so smaller kids would need to be comfortable with this. Due to his natural breed instincts, he won’t be suitable for a home with cats or pocket pets. He doesn’t show aggression but would definitely find them fun to chase. Barkley is a truly wonderful dog who is so much fun to have around. He will be a fantastic addition to his new family.

Don't see a breed attached to one of our dogs? That's because we don't breed label dogs of unknown genetic history. We can't guess at breeds but that's okay, because we can tell you about the dog's individual personality, character, and behaviour.
