About Summer

A few days before Christmas, we received a call to help a 12-month-old German Shepherd who had given birth to 5 puppies overnight in the pound, no-one knew she was pregnant, she was confused and extremely scared. We immediately moved Summer and her puppies into a safe, loving foster home, so that she could raise her babies, she has been an incredible mum from day 1, her babies fat, happy and Summer so attentive to their every need.
Whilst we have been honoured to watch Summer’s babies grow up, our hearts have broken several times over watching this young mum navigate the world. Just a baby herself, it is clear that Summer has lived a life of sadness and total isolation, she is terrified, everything is new to her. Now that Summer’s babies are grown and are ready to find homes of their own, we are worried for poor Summer, how she will cope without them in her current environment. Summer’s current foster home was only ever temporary, a safe place for this little family, but not a suitable home for Summer’s long-term rehabilitation.
We are now desperately searching for a foster or foster to adopt home for Summer, we need to move her before we can move her puppies to ensure she is safe and not traumatised watching her babies be taken away one by one. Summer currently escapes her yard whenever her babies are taken away from her, she panics to try and find where they have gone, she will continue to look for them when they have gone to their new homes unless she is an environment with no trace of the puppies. Summer’s new home needs to have secure fencing, we know that once Summer has been separated from her babies, she will start to relax, and it won’t be too long until we can meet the real Summer.
Summer is very sweet, we can see that she wants to trust and receive affection from humans, but she is very unsure. Summer will approach for sniffs and at times let people pat her, however she is very head shy and needs to go very slow. Summer needs a patient person who will work with her long-term, winning her trust and building that bond. Summer will back away and hide when she is scared, she has never shown any aggression to people, her fear response is flight. Summer needs a quite home in a not too busy area with 1 or 2 people, she is not suited to a busy home with children.
Ideally, we would place Summer with someone who has experience working with terrified dogs. Summer needs lots of patience and love; positive reinforcement and taking things slow will help her to come out of shell and build her confidence. Summer has never been on a lead; she doesn’t know the simple pleasure of going for a walk and currently slinks to the ground in fear. Summer settles in the car but is worried about getting in and out. This poor girl has been left to rot in a back yard and now needs help to meet the world.
Summer has previously lived with another dog, currently she doesn’t want any other dogs near her or her babies and will bark and growl at them to go away. Because we are unable to walk her on a lead, it hasn’t been possible to test her in an environment away from her pups, she may be very different when she isn’t in Mumma protection mode. For now, Summer needs a home without any other dogs or animals, she needs the time and space to unravel without feeling worried about them.
Summer is a long-term project for someone willing to give her a lifeline, it’s not going to be easy, but ask anyone that has ever witnessed a scared dog learn to love and trust, it is beyond worth it.
This poor girl has not lived, she has been kept in a yard her entire life, shown no kindness or love, and was found as stray with no-one coming forward for her, we suspect she was dumped. Then to top it all off, she gave birth to her babies on a pound floor all alone. Now at 14 months old, Summer has raised her family and done the most amazing job, it is now Summer’s time to shine, to live a life of her own and be shown just how great humans and the world can be.
If you can offer Summer a place in your home and are committed to her long-term rehabilitation and introduction to the world, please complete a foster or adoption application via our website.
We need your help to help this beautiful girl, she is currently a little broken, and needs help putting herself back together. We know that with time, patience and lots of love, she is going to be the most amazing, loyal dog.

Adoption details
We offer a 'Foster to Adopt' program. This means that the dog will go to live with their adoptive family for 4 weeks to ensure it is the perfect match for both the dog and new family. After the 4 weeks is complete, if all has gone well, the adoption is formalised and your new doggy companion is officially yours!
If you are interested in adopting from us, we ask that you fill out the Adoption Application form on our website (via the link provided below) with as much detail as possible, including the name of the dog you are interested in.
We do not rehome female dogs to a home where there is an existing female dog. Whilst there are always exceptions, it is generally unwise to have two females together; two males can sort it out, a male and a female can sort it out, but when two females fight, the results can be disastrous. For this reason, following the advice from numerous Veterinary behaviourists, as well as our own experience from the last eight years, we do not rehome females into homes with other female dogs.
All of our dogs are de-sexed, vaccinated, microchipped, flea and worm treated
