About Spotty
PLEASE NOTE THAT UNFORTUNATELY WE ARE UNABLE TO FLY OUR ANIMALS EITHER WITHIN WA OR INTERSTATE
NAME: Spotty
BEFORE RESCUE: Came to SAFE Esperance from the pound.
BREED: Chihuahua x Jack Russell
BREED TRAITS: Chihuahuas love to be with their people and are definitely companion dogs that do not like to be left alone. They love their family but can be aloof or wary of strangers and other dogs so early socialisation is very important. Chihuahuas cannot tolerate cold or hot weather so a warm coat in the winter and care re overheating in the summer is needed - they are not outside dogs. They are bright and willful but will learn if you make it fun and although small, have big personalities.
Jack Russells are lively, independent and clever. They are trainable but have a mind of their own and if bored can dig and chew. Terriers are devoted to their people, affectionate and love being with them so cannot be left for long periods. Jack Russells must be well socialised and trained with their stubborn streak and forthright nature.
***************************************************************
ASSETS: He’s shy initially, but affectionate, devoted, eager to please, friendly, and very sweet once he’s settled.
FAVOURITE THINGS: His people! He loves to follow his foster carer around the house and is just learning to play with his toys. He will sit patiently waiting for his person to return when they go out and leave him.
ENDEARING FEATURES: He’s cute and extremely loving, his foster carer describes him as a quiet little boy who needs to have his confidence built up. When he gets excited he lifts his front two feet up and seems to smile.
OTHER ANIMALS: He likes to be around other dogs but doesn’t like them in his face and will get growly but doesn’t react. He’s friendly with the cats in his foster home so could possibly live with a dog-savvy cat after gentle supervised introductions.
GENERAL INFO: Spotty hasn’t had any exposure to a lead so will need some training with this. He’s housetrained and will bark when someone is at the door. He doesn’t appear to be scared of anything as yet but his new owner will need to bear in mind that everything is new for him and he will need gentle reassurance in new situations. He knows how to sit on command but will need ongoing training with other commands.
ESSENTIALS for Spotty:
** A quiet, adult-only, loving home with someone who can be there with him for most of the day on a permanent basis or can take him with them when they leave the house.
** An owner who will dedicate time to training him and take him to classes where he can socialize and learn new things in a safe environment.
** He’s an active boy so will need daily exercise, playtime and mental activity. A home that is willing to involve him in daily activities is essential for him. Spotty has slightly underdeveloped muscles in his back legs which support his knees so good, gentle exercise daily will make him stronger.
** Spotty needs a fenced, secure yard with grass and interesting things to sniff and explore.
**Spotty loves to be with his people so he needs to be allowed inside the home when you are there and to sleep inside at night, preferably as close to his people as possible!
** Spotty would best suit an older home with minimal contact with children, just because of his wariness with new people. He would probably prefer to be the only dog in his new home but have regular interaction with other friendly dogs in a safe environment.
