About Max
MAX is a sweet 6 year old Male Toy Poodle who is looking for love
An ex breeding dog who spent 6 years of his life kept in a cage on a puppy farm, without any human contact or exposure to our domesticated world, but that life is now far behind him.
MAX came to us quite shy and timid, was frightened of the human touch, and is still nervous, the poor little guy :’( he took longer to allow us to get close and even pat him, but he is slowly learning that it can be nice to get some gentle pats and even comes looking for them. 😊 He has made leaps & bounds in the last few weeks, thanks to his Foster Mum and Foster fur siblings, he is trusting us more...
He is still skittish so you will need to approach slowly while he gets to know and trust you. When he does start to trust you, he will tuck himself near you and lay his head on your lap or your bed pillow
A canine companion or two in the home would definitely benefit Max, as he feels most comfortable around his own kind.
Max is currently living in a foster home with 3 other dogs, a beautiful senior Golden Retriever, a Cavoodle, and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. 2 of his foster sisters are also ex puppy farm breeders, and have played an integral part in restoring Max’s confidence in us humans. Max loves their company and enjoys lazing about in their fluffy dog beds on the sofa. Abby also lets him share her bed. They have been such a great support for him, it has truly helped bring him out of his shell and become confident enough to come up and enjoy pats and gentle massages from foster mum. Max has made many doggie friends along the way, both large and small. He loves meeting other dogs and is not intimidated by the size of the dog. He had a play with Harvey too :)
Max sleeps on the bed with Foster Mum and his Foster fur siblings. He loves to snuggle next to his foster sisters, and now even comfortable enough to lay his head on mum's pillow, aww
WALKING ON A HARNESS:
Max had never worn a collar, harness or walked on a leash before coming into our care, so as expected he is hesitant walking on lead, and is not a fan of having the lead clipped onto his collar or harness – this will get better with time, it's all so new for him… he just needs to learn that there are positive and happy adventures on the end of that lead. He will get there... and he will follow the other dogs to walk.
Until he trusts you we strongly recommended that you walk him on a harness and not just the collar because being so nervous with an unknown human will have him back out and slip out of his collar if he gets frightened or spooked
Max is still getting used to having a leash clipped into his harness and tension on the lead. He’s quite unsure about what’s going on behind his back. It will take some time before he gets used to it, so please be patient with him. Having said that he does get excited when it’s time for a walk… he loves his car rides, adventures and walks on the beach, especially walking with his buddies. He is becoming more and more confident and feeling brave enough to go exploring without you
DIET: Max’s diet consists of Premium Dry Small bite kibble and tinned chicken or tuna in gravy – he also loves home cooked meals and cottage cheese. He loves his food and will often try to eat another dog’s food even if he hasn’t finished his own - cheeky monkey!
TOILET & HOUSE TRAINED:
Max is now toilet trained, he takes himself outside, through the doggie door, but may require reminders until he settles into his new home
Max loves a soft snuggly bed and will often jump into the same bed with another dog as he seeks the comfort of another dog. Having said they also need their own space to decompress and process their new learning experiences, so don’t be surprised if you see Max taking himself outside or to another bedroom, or an open crate to have some downtime in a quiet place – This is essential to help empty their emotional stress bucket, so it is important we provide them the choice or space to go to should they need to be alone.
Max is still learning about personal space, about us humans and our domesticated world. He has a lot to learn and try to figure out but there is no rush, we cannot hurry the learning process when they have been so shut down for so long, and they don’t need to learn everything at once.
Once Max gets to know his new human, he will have so much love to give you. Max is very intelligent and has been quick to learn under the right guidance
MAX’S IDEAL FAMILY:
Max is an indoor Dog with access to the yard for toileting or exploring. He would suit a family who is home more often than not, be patient enough to let Max make his own choices and learn in his own time. Another canine in the family would be ideal for Max to continue to learn from and draw confidence from. A family to include him as part of their family, take him on adventures, walks, car rides and slowly open up his world and show him what he’s been missing out on all these years.
