Meet Haumaru, a charismatic and loving canine companion ready to bring joy and adventure into your life. He has a personality that shines, with equal parts of intelligence and unco that will get you giggling when you least expect it. Haumaru is happiest when he is invited to join in on your activities and excursions throughout the day.

Other dogs: Haumaru always looks forward to times with other dogs, especially those his size (kelpies, lab’s, border collies) that he can have a run and tumble with to let out some energy. We feel Haumaru would be best suited to a house with another dog that he can bond with for life.

Training: Haumaru is very interested in training and enjoys working for his meals. In his first three weeks in foster care he learned sit, stay, down, roll over, spin, tunnel (under legs), and leave it. He is aware of left, right, straight, cross and sit commands when on walks and enjoys being told in advance where he is going. He is beginning to learn to clean up his toys, and loves the more complex training. He is still learning skills such as walking to heel in public places where there are distractions, so will benefit from consistent training and firm but loving leadership. He would make a great companion for someone wanting to have an agility or obedience dog.

Haumaru is confident around people and is not territorial. He is aware of the power he has to make someone's day greeting them on a walk, so will often try to greet passers by on the street. He has learned to refrain from jumping up more often than not in recent months!

Exercise and stimulation needs: Haumaru loves puzzles, including find it tasks such as tearing up old boxes to find treats. He has a number of kong toys and frozen toys that are rotated frequently to give him things to do. He loves the beach, car trips and camping adventures. A good bone keeps him entertained on outings, and he will happily curl up to rest provided he has had a big walk (3-5km). Haumaru would love someone he can do daily jogs with!

Haumaru is crate trained when sleeping, and is able to be left at home alone for a few hours at a time out of his crate. He would be best suited to a home that has people or another dog at home for most of the day, and would love a big yard to play in.
