About Leo - 2 Year Old Dachshund (Trial)
Meet Leo, a beautiful three year old chocolate dapple Dachshund.
Leo is a very gentle soul who loves human affection and will make a loyal companion for the right person or family. Leo is like a little shadow to his current foster mum and enjoys following her around the house to make sure he is close to someone at all times. Leo is a nosey and curious boy, following you and watching everything you do. Although he prefers to be cuddled up next to his human rather than playing with toys, he likes exploring the outdoors and enjoys chasing the hose and sun bathing on the deck.
Leo loves being carried around like a baby and will spend hours cuddling with his human on the couch. Leo loves his day naps but also gets very excited sniffing around outside, rolling in the grass and does happy zoomies when he knows it’s time to go for a walk.
Although Leo is very affectionate, he is quite wary of new people and will take a while to warm to his new family so will need to go to a home who is respectful of his space while he adjusts to his new surroundings. His new family will need to understand that he won’t bound up to you first meeting and will take a bit to suss you out and feel comfortable. However; once you have his trust and he has approved of you, an abundant of cuddles, love and affection is on offer.
Leo is extremely wary of men and has been known to extensively bark when first meeting a male. However, if Leo is given space, patience and respect he comes around in his own time and will relax and be up on their lap in his own time. Leo can be quite vocal at times, especially when he first meets people but has settled into life with his foster mum and now only barks when someone is at the door.
While Leo is toilet trained, he is a typical Dachshund in the fact that he does excited little wees often so a house with carpet would not be suitable for cleaning purposes. Leo is crate trained and happily sleeps quietly in his crate in his foster mums bedroom all night until you are ready to get him up. Leo knows how to use a doggy door, has good recall and can sit.
Leo has lived with other dogs in the past and gets along well with them, however he would prefer to be housed as an only dog or with an older dog who has a relaxed, calm personality as he is a very submissive boy and needs to be allowed to come out of his shell and live his full doggy potential. A meet and greet with another dog in his new family is a must.
Leo has been socialised with kids of all ages and absolutely loved the company of his foster mums nieces who are 18 months, 3 and 6. He has also been socialised with teenagers and was comfortable around them after some time. If going to a family with children they would need to be dog savvy kids and respectful of Leo’s personal space when needed.
Leo would like to go to a home where someone is home majority of the time so full time workers would not be suitable.
Leo loves going for walks and will need a family who is committed to continue to walking him daily. Due to his long hair he does need brushing every few days to ensure he doesn’t get matting behind his beautiful long ears. Leo doesn’t mind water and is a very well behaved boy when having a bath. He needs to be bathed at least weekly as his long ears can get caught in his food at times!
Adoption fee is $700. Leo is desexed, vaccinated, worm and flea treated. Leo is currently in care in Thornton, NSW.
