About Reggie
PLEASE NOTE THAT UNFORTUNATELY WE ARE UNABLE TO FLY OUR ANIMALS EITHER WITHIN WA OR INTERSTATE
NAME: Reggie
BEFORE RESCUE: Came to SAFE Esperance from the pound.
BREED: Chihuahua x Fox Terrier
BREED TRAITS: Chihuahua - they love to be with their people and are definitely companion dogs that do not like to be left alone. They love their family but can be aloof or wary of strangers and other dogs so early socialisation is very important. Chihuahuas cannot tolerate cold or hot weather so a warm coat in the winter and care re overheating in the summer is needed - they are not outside dogs. They are bright and wilful but will learn if you make it fun and although small, have big personalities.
Fox Terrier: originally bred to flush foxes out of their lair the Fox Terrier is now a companion dog. They are highly intelligent and energetic and do best with active owners – they are also known to be independent and somewhat stubborn. They are affectionate with family but can be a little wary of strangers and unknown dogs so early socialisation is a must. Fox Terriers are easy to train and need plenty of mental stimulation; they also have a high prey drive so cannot live with small pets unless reared with them.

ASSETS: He’s affectionate, devoted, eager to please, friendly, active, and playful! Reggie hasn’t had the best start in life but has settled well into foster care. He’s very affectionate with his people but due to his tough life is wary and growly initially with strangers.
FAVOURITE THINGS: Reggie loves to play with similar sized female dogs. He enjoys car rides and playing in the paddock of his foster home. He can be a bit of a grumpy old man at times and doesn’t like male dogs getting in his space.
ENDEARING FEATURES: He has very expressive eyes and is very intelligent, nothing gets past him!
OTHER ANIMALS: He gets on well with other similar sized female dogs after gentle introduction but isn’t a big fan of other male dogs. He is overly focused on cats so we won’t rehome him to a home with a cat for their safety.
GENERAL INFO: Reggie is still training with his lead walking so his new owner will need to continue with this. He’s housetrained and will bark when someone is at the door. He doesn’t appear to be scared of storms or loud noises and he knows a few commands. He’s a clever boy so training should be a breeze with him. He travels well in the car, enjoys being outside and would probably thrive with a daily routine.
ESSENTIALS for Reggie:
** A calm adult-only, loving home with someone who can be there with him for most of the day on a permanent basis or can take him with them when they leave the house.
** He’s quite an active boy so will need daily exercise, playtime and mental activity. A home that is willing to involve him in daily activities is essential for him.
** An owner who wants a full-time companion and will dedicate time to training him, taking him to classes where he can socialize and learn new things in a safe environment. He will need a very dog-savvy owner who understands his limitations while he is adjusting to new things. When Reggie is out of his comfort zone he can be grumpy and growly and if pushed too far, may snap. Sadly Reggie has had a tough life surviving on the streets and has been attacked by a large dog so can be defensive.
** Reggie needs a fenced, secure yard with grass and interesting things to sniff and explore.
**Reggie loves to be with his people, so he needs to be allowed inside the home when you are there and to sleep inside at night.
** Reggie would best suit an older home with minimal or no contact with children, just because of his wariness with new people. He would probably prefer to be the only dog in his new home but have regular interaction with other female dogs.
If Reggie sounds like the perfect fit for your family, please send an enquiry and we’ll be in touch soon.
