About Mary
Meet Mary. A demure and loving gentle soul who is looking for the right forever home for her. There truly is something about Mary that makes you fall in love with her.
Mary is a quiet and sweet girl who we believe hadn’t had much interaction with humans before coming in to care. As human contact is relatively new to her, she is apprehensive about human touch but she has improved so much since being in foster care. She now accept pats and has recently discovered that she loves chin and ear rubs and is also now giving her foster carer little love licks. Although she will come up for a sniff and will accept a pat, she is still cautious so her new family will need to understand this and go slowly with her.
She loves nothing more than to follow you around and be by your side, but she also has that Shih Tzu feistiness in her and sometimes barks at people when they come in the house (or if you take away her bone!). She loves to greet you at the front door with a full wagging tail which is so sweet to come home to.
Mary loves her food, and doesn’t mind a treat! She also loves her walks and walks well on lead. She now excitedly barks at her foster carer when she realises it is time for a walk. If she is off lead, she will trot on ahead and she doesn't mind chasing the birds or butterflies!
She is toilet trained and will take herself out to do her business if the door is open. Being a Shih Tzu, Mary does shed hair but not very much. She gets hot when her fur grows long so she will need to be groomed on a regular basis.
Mary loves other dogs and the resident dog in her foster home. She is much more confident with a dog by her side to show her the way and help her see the world is a safe place. Her foster carer has a cat that Mary is fine with although she tends to keep a distance.
Mary has hip dysplasia, spine scoliosis and a dislocated shoulder (please read the Medical notes below). She has a little limp when she walks and she can’t (or won't) jump. However, she happily uses a doggy ramp & (makeshift) steps to get up and down from a couch or bed comfortably.
Although Mary is fine with young kids, we would prefer a home that does not have young kids just because of her conditions. She is not a dog that likes to be picked up, partly to her being scared of humans and partly because of her medical conditions (we believe).
Mary requires a home that is a quiet, routine driven with a friendly resident dog in similar size for companionship that will help grow her confidence. THERE MUST BE ANOTHER DOG IN THE HOUSEHOLD. Her new home will have a patient family who are willing to help Mary blossom. Mary’s new family will also have to accomodate her needs and possible medical care in the future, so please take this in to consideration when making an application (and make sure to read the Medical notes below before applying).

Medical notes
Mary has hip dysplasia, spine scoliosis and dislocated shoulder (which is believed to be an old injury).
She has had two lots of x-rays and a visit to a Vet specialist since being in our care. It was Initially thought she would need surgery on her shoulder but after seeing the specialist, they have recommended conservative management of her conditions. This includes:
* daily low level pain relief
* joint supplement
* Keeping her slim
* to keep her from jumping up and down furniture (she happily uses the doggy ramp) and
* walks to be on low impact surfaces such as grass and/ or sand. (Not concrete or gravel).
She does have a slight limp when she walks / trots. If she gets tired or hot, she will let you know by sitting down.
Please note: she may possibly need surgery at a later stage in her life. We cannot predict when this will be, or if at all but any potential adopters must be aware of this.
