About Sammy Applegate
TO APPLY FOR ADOPTION PLEASE SEND IN APPLICATION FORM AVAILABLE BELOW:
https://www.victoriandogrescue.org.au/about-vicdrg/adoption-and-foster-application-forms.html/
Sammy is a gorgeous boy who hasn’t had much interaction and exposure to the world in his young life. Because of this, he has some work to do with his new people. But, his friendly and intelligent nature are great starting points.
Sammy is keen on forming a bond with his people, although he can be initially wary with men. He is house trained and used to using a doggy door. That said, he’s had limited access to the home in his past life and may need some encouragement while learning new house rules. Sammy knows some basic commands and has shown himself in care to be a willing pupil. Sammy sleeps well through the night and is calm when left alone inside for a few hours.
Sammy enjoys getting out, seeing the locals and checking the neighbourhood weemails. He has not been getting regular exercise and socialisation for some time, so has some trouble managing his excitement and occasionally reacts to other dogs when he is overwhelmed. During his short time in care, Sammy has shown himself responsive to rewards-based training and with positive leadership we are confident he will nail good walking and dog etiquette in no time.
In care, Sammy is showing a great deal of potential to grow in his forever home. He needs to be with adult dog-savvy people who are willing to work with him to overcome the life limitations that have affected his ways in the world. He is loveable, willing and able, and looking forward to a new world where he is able to meet his brilliant potential.
However Sammy will also push boundaries so he does not need just love but he needs rules so he knows what is okay and not. You will need to think of him as going through that teenage phase and be able to comfortably do this. He will be a happier more settled boy when he understands what is good behaviour and what is not.
If Sammy puts a light in your eye, he would love you to submit an adoption application.
Thank you to Yu-Hsiang Su of Soar Photography for the fantastic photos of Sammy.

All our dogs are desexed, C5 vaccinated with intranasal, microchipped, wormed, and flea treated. All necessary vetwork such as dentals, surgery, eye treatment are also carried out. We are no longer heartworm testing as we have not had one positive test since we began in 2006. If a dog comes to us on heartworm treatment this is continued.

Adoption details
We are a community fostercare network, not a shelter, and our dogs and cats are cared for in private homes. Note that we are very careful where we rehome our dogs and cats and we have an intensive process. If you want a quick turnaround we are not the group for you. If you seem like a good match for the dog of your choice we will organise a telephone chat, a meet and greet and a property check. We offer free assistance for six weeks for any issues, a lifetime takeback policy with full refund of the adoption fee, and will always be available to offer advice.
We care for our dogs and cats and we want you to as well. We know that genuine applicants have no trouble with this process and understand that if we refuse you a dog or cat, it is because you are not the best match for that pet.
Our commitment to the dogs and cats in our care is total and we treat each one as if we are passing on a family pet. This may not suit you so we point out that there are equally great dogs and cats available in pounds, shelters and with other rescue groups.

Please note that we do not take/make telephone calls prior to receiving an application.
Commonly asked questions and their answers are provided when you email us. Unfortunately we usually will not have time to reply to enquiries in more detail and will give priority to completed applications over enquiries. Priority will also be given to typed applications which are easier for us to read and to copy relevant parts.
We look forward to receiving your application.
