Meet sweet, loving and loyal: he has come such a long way since coming into care.
When Max first came to his foster carer's home he was lovely and gentle with everyone: her teenage daughters, male partner and male kelpie. He showed initial shyness and fear from her dominant dog but they are now best buddies. Max was a gentleman and showed him patience and let him know he’s a visitor to his home showing he’s well socialised with other dogs. Max loves being around his foster brother snuggling in bed together and has a lot of energy for playing. He lives fetch, jumping for the ball, and loves walks.
Max is very smart and within a week learned to sit for his food, sit before being allowed to be let in the house and to return the ball for fetch. He is a sweetpea with a new toy, showing so much excitement - but he doesn’t rip them apart, he sneaks them all into his bed where his carers find all sorts of things in the morning! And not chewed up. Max is getting used to a halti, but walks on the lead very well so may have had some previous experience. He barks excitedly at other dogs but not experienced any other issues on the lead.
As he came to the pound as a stray, his history is not known, but Max has demonstrated some fear responses with loud noises, new surroundings and strangers. He can show a bark response when faced with something he isn’t comfortable with. He is receiving behaviour training around his fear responses and has improved immensely over the past few months, but will require ongoing commitment from a patient owner willing to work on this with him.
Max is not triggered by other dogs barking in the street, and does not bark at people walking past the house. However will let you know if someone is coming in the yard or is at the front door, making him an excellent guard dog. He is very protective of his foster family and lives to rest his head on your shoulder or lap for a cuddle and follows you around. Max would be best suited to a home where someone wants a very loyal and protective dog, with a good warning bark.
Max has the biggest puppy dog eyes and an even bigger heart.
Max is $350 to adopt and comes desexed, microchipped, C5 vaccinated, heartworm tested (negative) and given flea/tick/worm prevention.
