About Caramilk
Meet our divine golden girl, the stunning Border Collie Caramilk aka Cara
This beautiful little light weight girl is a smaller size Border only weighing in at 17 kilos
She is very affectionate once she knows you, actually one could say she is OVERLY affectionate and lacks personal space lol
Cara has had a really rough start to life coming from a breeding hoarder home and although it appears she has never had a littler herself she certainly had lived a very sheltered life prior to coming into our care.
Cara has come a long way in the months in our care BUT she will need a kind and understanding home who are prepared to continue her training and big wide world experiences.
Favorite things
Pats, pats, pats and more pats
Throwing her toys around the back yard
Playing with younger dogs especially puppies
Food, treats, anything edible lol
Interaction with humans
Once Cara knows you she is a happy affectionate girl
Initially can be quite timid meeting néw people and we have found getting down to her level and allowing her to warm to you she will soon be all over you for kisses and cuddles.
Once Cara knows and trusts you there is NOOOOO getting rid of her affection lol Cara has shown to be more nervous around males but she does come round with patience and understanding. Cara is learning her manners around people and practicing her sitting for pats which she is doing amazingly well with.
Obedience/training
Being an intelligent breed she is going to be easy to train with a family that is committed to put in the time and effort. She is showing great potential to be a quick learner wanting to please. Cara knows to sit, drop and practice, stay for food and wait at the front door.
Cara is doing amazingly with recall. We have been training her on a long lead and in an enclosed park she will quickly come and immediately sit for a treat. Chicken jerky is her all time favorite.
Animal social skills
Cara can be nervous around new dogs and give a little growl of ‘don’t come to close’ but once comfortable is happy to engage in play. She does have her border collie traits of barking when there is a lot of excitement of multiple dogs running and playing but one on one she is great and we are seeking a home with another gentle male dog to help improve her confidence. Cara does prefer her own space and is not drawn to say hello to every dog at the park and will walk past other dogs
Cara as a pup has had to fight for her food as she lived with multiple dogs so is quite protective around her bowl at dinner time. She must be fed separately if there are other dogs in the household to reduce her stress levels around feeding time. If adopted with another dog this will need to be managed extremely carefully. She seems ok when giving treats out in open spaces such as training at the park but even humans eating food and leaving plates around with scapes and another dog going near that upsets her She has not shown reactivity to people touching her whilst eating and will take treats gently from your hand
Independence
Cara is a fairly independent girl and will happily stay outside during the day. In fact when she first arrived she actually preferred outside but has now learnt inside has comfy doggy beds and usually a couple of humans that dish out treats lol
Cara loves playing with her toys and has often been seen to toss them in the air and catch them again. Being an active breed she will need good amounts of stimulation. She is very rarely barky unless she hears the dog next door or a pesky possum. She has had one episode of howling and barking when separated from her doggy pals but other than that she seems to be content outside
Hygiene
Cara has a typical border-coat so will need regular brushing and grooming to keep her coat clean and free from matting especially around her hind legs. She does enjoy a gentle brush
Sleeping
Initially Cara chose to sleep outside hiding under the bushes but as her confidence has improved she is now straight in through the doggy door and settles in for the night on a comfy doggy bed. She is learning the life of luxury and taking to it like a duck to water
Car travel
Cara loves going in the car as she knows this means a trip to the park. She travels well
Exercise
Cara gets excited to put on her harness for walking. She is a bit of a zig zagger on the lead as does like to sniff the daily news but not an excessive puller
She has made a great little running buddy and is happy to trot along as her carer heads for a run. She is a working breed so definitely needs a daily walk or run so please don’t apply if you cannot meet her needs
Inside the home
Cara is polite inside and as much as she would like to sit on your lap is easily directed to being on the floor and sleeping on her bed. Still being a pup she has not quite outgrown the opportunistic chewing phase so will steal things to chew if you leave them lying around.
