Santo is a 10-month-old bundle of joy who exudes happiness and playful energy. This little man has a heart of gold but a unique heart condition called tetralogy of fallot.
This means he sometimes needs a breather when he overexerts himself, So should not lead an active lifestyle and will require monthly blood checkups to ensure his well-being, with this extending out to every 2-3 months with all going well.
Santo's heart condition means he is likely here with us for a good time, not a long time, with the average life expectancy for dogs with his diagnosis 2-3 years - although the caridologist vet has a dog on his books that is 9, and with Santo's zest for life, we wouldn't be surprised if he outlasted the average too!
Don't let his heart condition fool you – Santo is full of beans and a sociable pup who adores other dogs and his humans. He'll follow either everywhere with his forever wagging tail, dishing out as many licks as you'll allow. He's as gentle as can be and doesn't have a mean bone in his body.
If you have another dog at home, Santo would love having a furry friend by his side but it's not essential.

Medical notes
Santos has not been desexed, because of his heart condition his cardiologist has assessed him as being a very poor candidate for recovering from a general anaesthetic. He will have an additional non-breeding contract.
He is also not a candidate for surgical intervention for his heart condition.
OFFICIAL DIAGNOSTIC CONCLUSION
Echocardiographic examination revealed tetralogy of Fallot (ToF) with a large ventricula septal defect (VSD), a dextropositioned over-riding aorta, very severe pumonic stenosis/pulmonary artery hypoplasia and severe associated right ventricular hypertrophy PCV today was 68%.
Due to the presence of tetralogy of Fallot with right to left flow across the VSD there is systemic hypoxia as a result of the right to left flow across the VSD, which has caused the current increase in PCV.
Periodic monitoring of the PCV is advised and if there is a marked increase in PCV (>75% phlebotomy or treatment with hydroxyurea (10-25mg/kg PO q12-48hrs titrated to effect) to maintain the PCV at 60-65% would be advised. Monitoring of the PCV is advised every 1-3 months.
Unfortunately a high percentage of dogs with Tetralogy of Fallot develop refractory right side congestive heart failure at a young age. Sudden death has also been reported to occur in dogs with Tetralogy of Fallot.
Santo's owner is to monitor for signs of right sided congestive heart failure with abdominal distention suggestive of ascites and/or increased respiratory effort indicative of pleural effusion. If ascites or pleural effusion is confirmed then adomino/pleurocentesis would be advised followed by ongoing treatment with frusemide, spironolactone and, if there was no increase in serum creatinine, an ACEi.
Starting Over Dog Rescue will cover his medical expenses for 12 months where one of our vets / specialists are used.
