About Helmet
Helmet is a beautiful dog who loves his people but has had a really rough start to his life. He came from a breeder who kept him until 7 months of age, so he really finds life in the suburbs quite challenging.
His family adopted him from Gumtree and as first time dog owners they have found managing his separation anxiety and generalised anxiety quite challenging. He took to the kids straight away and loves sleeping on their beds, but most other things in life he struggles with. He is a very sweet dog that loves people, but he probably loves people a little too much as he can't cope with being alone.
He loves other dogs and plays very nicely with their parents dog and with the right dog, this may help his separation anxiety. His family have been working very hard with a trainer to build his confidence going on walks and knowing how to cope with life in the suburbs.
He has a very sensitive stomach and came with a pretty severe giardia infection that is responding to treatment after many vet visits. He will likely need a low fat special diet long-term, but otherwise loves his food and chicken in particular. He is on the lower end of his weight scale but the vet has indicated that’s where helmet will most likely stay. His 22kgs. He is a tall dog with long legs.
Helmet loves to play ball in the backyard. He plays well with kids but we think he would be better off with slightly older children as sometimes he doesn’t know his own size and can be a bit clumsy around very young children. Helmet is fully toilet trained and uses a doggy door with ease.
Helmet needs to have daily medication which we give him with peanut butter and he has no issues taking the tablets.
Helmet walks well on a lead but becomes anxious easily when there are a lot of other people around.
His family are devastated to have to rehome Helmet, but they have a busy family with young children, so managing a dog with severe anxiety is something they are finding very challenging. The kids are young and there are lots of activities, which means that Helmet sometimes does need to be alone.
Helmet would best suit someone with another dog at home (ideally another poodle, as this is the type of dog he is most comfortable with) or someone who works from home and has owned a dog with anxiety before.
Medical notes
Helmet is an anxious dog. His currently on setraline 100mg for his generalised anxiety and separation anxiety. A prescription will be provided for ongoing medications, but he will need rechecks every 6 months with a veterinarian for further medications. His behaviour vet is happy to help you manage his anxiety with medications for 6 months post-adoption.
