About Princess - 8 Year Old Maltese X Shih Tzu (Trial)
Princess is a delightful highly energetic cheerful dog, weighing under 7kg.
Princess’ favourite thing in life is going for walks. She enjoys her morning and afternoon 20min walk. After walking she is then considerably calmer throughout the day and night.
Princess has a great appetite and is treat driven. Any extra energy can be burnt off very quickly by doing some training practice. She has learnt to stay and wait until given the signal to ‘find it’. Sniffing out the treats is a challenge that she finds very rewarding. She has also picked up many new skills such as using a doggy door which just shows that you can teach an intelligent and confident old dog some new tricks.
She also loves to be groomed. Twice a day she needs her eyes cleaned and a brush to keep the knots out of her fine coat. As long as the water is warm, she is also content in the bath.
Princess does think that it is her role in the household to bark when the door bell rings. She can be quite standoffish with new arrivals and takes some time to develop a bond. She continues to bark for some time until everyone is sitting down and settled. Once she does feel comfortable, she will then take pats and belly rubs. The barking can also start up in reaction to the barks of other dogs, car horns in the distance, the post person approaching, children on bicycles, or cars arriving in the street. Training will need to continue to deal with this.
Princess does not like being left home alone and does suffer from separation anxiety. She would ideally suit a family where the humans are home a lot or there is another dog to provide comfort. However, even though she has bonded strongly with her foster sibling Bernie, she does try and dominate other dogs. She has not been tested with cats, birds or other pets.
We think Princess will be best placed in a calm house, either as the only dog or potentially with a large submissive dog. Her ideal home would be where humans provide lots of love and attention, are home more often than not and have time to commit to her training. She needs at least one good outing and exercise session, plus regular doggy social time. Princess also needs a yard to have a run that is 100% escape-proof for a little dog who is good at slipping through gaps.
Princess is in foster care in Salamander Bay, NSW. Her adoption fee is $500. She is microchipped, desexed, vaccinated and has had her teeth cleaned. She has also been treated for fleas and worms.
