Daffydara has so much love to give and would suit a family that will have someone home most of the time so that he can spend as much time as possible curled up on your lap or at your feet – this is simply his most favourite thing in the world! He is an absolute softy that will melt your heart and get you all the compliments when new people meet him!
People: He absolutely loves his humans and wants everyone he passes to be his best friend – you couldn’t have a better temperament with humans, everyone he meets falls head over heels for this absolute lovebug! Daffydara would suit a home as the only dog if his family will be home much more often than not. Otherwise a home with a doggo friend to keep him company would also be great – but preferably an older of lower energy dog as he is a bit timid and doesn’t love over-excited puppies getting in his face. Loves kids and seems to be quite good with them but he is big for a puppy and can get over excited so better if any kids are a bit older and dog savvy as he may knock over smaller kids – particularly with his crazy tail!
Behaviour: Daffydara didn’t have the easiest start to life and really needs to find a loving forever home that can provide him consistency and most importantly love. He is incredibly eager to please his humans and absolutely food motivated (and has the appetite of a horse) – so is a good learner and very responsive to his humans. The potential for this beautiful boy is amazing – he is a bit anxious and get scarred quite easily (e.g. cars, vacuums) so might take him a little bit of time to settle into his new home, so will need a family that will help him build his confidence by proving him the love and affection he deserves! When left home alone he will need to have some stimulating toys otherwise he might look for things that are fun to chew! He very rarely barks but doesn’t like being left outside when his favourite humans are home – he wants to be with his family as much as possible!
Animals: Daffydara is intrigued by other animals but doesn’t love it when they get in his face. He is great with other dogs – but for high-energy dogs that try to force him to play with them he can be a bit reactive at first but after he is comfortable with them he is great! He would be perfect with an older or lower energy dog as Daffydara isn’t the biggest “player” – he prefers dogs he can snuggle with and have the occasional play. In a previous foster home he was fine with the carers cat after a slow introduction, but hasn’t been tested recently, although it seems if the other animal is not in his face he will be fine with them after a slow introduction.
Size: Daffydara is listed as a great dane x – but don’t let that fool you! He is shorter and more slender then a Great Dane, and almost looks more like a pointer. He is on the larger size of medium and looks like he is reaching full size so unlikely to get much larger!
Energy: Definitely on the lower to moderate end of energy for a dog his age! He doesn’t really love playing – both with dogs or humans – more prefer snuggling! Requires mental stimulation more then physical exercise!
Training: Well toilet trained and sleeps through the night very well without accidents! He knows basic commands but still needs consistent training. Walks relatively well on lead – but perfectly with a Halti! He does have the occasional accident when he is scared or stressed so the first week in a new home may see a few accidents as he gets acquainted with his new home, but when he knows he is in a safe and loving home he is very good (unless the evil vacuum gets to close and scares the wee out of him!).
Overall, Daffydara is such a beautiful and sweet boy – if you are after a dog that wants to spend all his time with his family, curled up on the couch, or at the foot of your bed (or even in the bed if you’ll let him!) then this is the dog for you! He treats every human as his best friend and just needs a family that are going to reciprocate the love he shows and show him that he is in a loving home that he can trust and grow into.
