Adult cats save their meows just for us humans. Think of it as their way of learning our language, since meowing isn’t really part of normal cat-to-cat conversation.
When your cat meows, they could be asking for food, a door to be opened, or simply giving you a cheerful “meow-llo” when you walk in. Sometimes, they’re just turning up the volume to make sure they’ve got your full attention.
Kittens meow at their mothers when they’re hungry, cold, or need comfort, but once they’re grown, cats mostly switch to other ways of communicating with fellow felines: purring, hissing, yowling, flicking their tails, or using body language and scent marking.
So, if your catto is meowing excessively, and you’re worried something might be up, it’s worth checking in with your vet - just in case it’s more than a request for a midnight snack.
