About Uri
Uri is an 18 month old Great Dane cross. His dad was a Great Dane but he has taken on the size of his mother which was a Rottweiler cross Labrador.
Uri is looking for a home that has had experience with a dog that can be fearful. New things take Uri much longer than the average to get comfortable with, particularly in confined spaces and with new people or visitors to the home. When Uri is home with his family or out and about on a walk, he’s very relaxed. He doesn’t suffer a lot of anxiety, rather gets fearful at times.
The great news is that Uri has lived with chickens and cats and enjoys their company. He’ll try to get the cat to play but all the cat has to do is give him a bit of swipe and he gets the message it’s not play time. Uri has been around horses and is not a fence jumper so could be happy and safe on a rural property. Uri has got on well with all the dogs he’s met and could live with other social dogs. In fact, following the lead of a more confident dog around people could be beneficial for him. We are looking for a child free home for Uri and one that doesn’t have a massive amount of new people coming and going as this will prove difficult for Uri.
Uri needs a very dedicated and patient home to help him work through his fear issues. He isn’t a fan of the vet (lets face it who is) but this fear will also need to be managed carefully.
Uri is building on his current training which includes going into his crate when asked, sit, drop and wait at the door to politely let you through. His leash walking is coming along and he is quite easily managed on leash while out walking. Uri’s ‘jumping up’ is a work in progress and still has a way to go. He hasn’t learned recall yet and therefore it will be quite some time before he may be safely able to be off lead. This will also be dependent on how he progresses with his current fear of new people.
18 months old is still in the puppy stage for a big dog so Uri can be excitable but isn’t overly destructive for his age. Some things are safe to be left out but do so with reasonable risk! Left alone with a pool noodle in the backyard and Uri will assume it’s there to be chewed into little bits. He is toilet trained and enjoys spending time inside with his people.
Uri could go to full time workers but will need a couple of weeks to settle in and build up to being left alone. He’ll do best with at least one (or two) 30 minute walks a day combined with the same again on his training. When left alone he likes his Kong for entertainment. He’s not a nuisance barker but will alert to people coming close to the home. Uri doesn’t have a huge amount of stamina but does need stimulation and lots of daily opportunities to work on his issues so that he can move past them and enjoy life to the full.
