About Sugar ~ 9yo Shih-Tzu x Maltese (On Trial 7/6/20)
Introducing our sweet little honey pot Sugar! Sugar is an adorable 9 year old Maltese x Shih-Tzu boy who has some special medical needs - he is looking for a special and loving home to dote on him and commit to the long term daily management of his health issues - understanding the financial, dietary and practical management.
Personality-wise Sugar is a quiet and unassuming gentle soul who is fantastic with everyone he meets. He is great with other little dogs, well-mannered children and cats - he is friendly with them all. He is such an easy-going boy.
Health-wise Sugar has a few medical issues which are being managed well in foster care currently. We are looking for a loving family who will adopt him and take over the responsibility of his care long term - ensuring that in his new home he never wants for anything. Sugar has Cushings disease and a possible collapsed trachea which causes him to cough a few times a day (more so in cold weather). Sugar also doesn’t have the eyesight he once did so dim areas or distance can cause confusion for him. We’d suggest chatting to your vet for more information on the long term management of Cushings disease and collapsed tracheas in preparation for expressing interest in adopting Sugar. Consider also if a dog with reducing eyesight would be the right match for your home - for example we would prefer a single level house with not a lot of stairs. Being a senior we also request that his new family be committed to regular health checks including dentals as guided by your vet.
Sugar loves his food and isn’t a fussy eater - he even eats his veggies with a passion. He will require a good quality, enriching diet that is low in calories for his lifetime. Definitely no cheap, processed dog-food on the menu for this dear little chap! Sugar is also on Tuffrock Pk9 - this joint supplement product lasts about 4 months and costs around $60.
Sugar could be a perfect match for semi retirees whose kids have left the nest and who are looking to spoil a furchild. Although Sugar is fabulous with kids we would prefer a home without them as they may encourage a level of activity that is too much for a senior. However, if you have visiting children /grand children who will be respectful of this gorgeous senior then he’d enjoy their visits and play-time.
Sugar would love to have a canine playmate in his new home - another friendly, little female senior dog to play with would be perfect . Sugar is an inside dog who sleeps inside on his own doggy bed. He enjoys a short walk each day - enjoying the opportunity to get out and about on a nice day to meet people along the way. Medical issues don’t hold this social butterfly back from living his best life.
So if you are looking for a new best friend and have the means to manage Sugar’s medical needs long term then please contact us on email anne4drn@gmail.com . Sugar is in foster care in Singleton, NSW 2330 (west of Newcastle). He is not available for interstate or long distance adoption.
Sugar’s adoption fee is $300 and includes his desexing, vaccinations, flea and worm treatments and microchipping. You can see all our available dogs at www.dogrescuenewcastle.com.au
