Hey everyone!
My name is Kane, from Hawaiian origin meaning "warrior". Why? Because I fought my way from bad health and abandonment and have come out on top, a healthy and happy boy. My owner abandoned me in the pound, and we don't know why. I am a really well mannered, loving boy - I guess the disposable culture we have these days meant I was disposable too? I was a bit malnourished and dirty, so much so that the hair on my face fell out!! I ran out of time in the council pound and should have been put to sleep- but they pulled strings to keep me - I was far too well mannered to be put down!! OTC finally had a space for me and collected me and all my poundie friends. What a happy day it was when we all landed to safety in Qld!
Once OTC came for me, I learned what love and care was like. I am gentle and eager to please, and lap up every second of the love. The hair on my face grew back, and I got to a healthy weight. I am super dog friendly, and good with kids. I'm super clumsy and funny; I like to use my paws to play, and often 'do the Lion King' with other dogs, aka standing on my back legs, pawing and awooooo-ing with them. I am so fun and funny to watch! I am brave at the vet, and let them do whatever is needed. I like the car, I get buckled in and just sit there and watch the world fly by. I am currently sleeping either outside on the verandah on a dog hammock with the others, or if I want to I sleep in the loungeroom. My toilet training is great! The only time I don't respond to command is when I don't feel you've given me enough belly rubs... I will lay there until you pat me! (see video, how could you resist!)
My current carer works full time and I just hang out in the yard with the other dogs. I live behind a 4ft fence which seems to keep me in just fine, so my ideal home has either 4ft or higher. I have lived with a small breed dog, large breed dogs, cats and ducks. I get along great with all of them, but the cats hated me haha they're so funny and I just want to sniff them!! I am very gentle with them and respectful of their space. I love rope toys, bouncey balls and squeaky toys. I know sit, wait and shake, and am a bit scared of things like mops and brooms... I will bail and hang out in the yard until you are finished with those scary things! When my carer walks me, it is with a 'Halti'- it's like a head harness that stops me pulling. I have been to the beach and loved it, and have good recall so am trustworthy in unfenced areas. My carer takes me to the forestry with the other dogs and I have a blast!
I would fit easily into most homes. I just need someone who will have me included as part of the family, who can take me out a few times a week to see the world, and has another dog friend for company while you're away. I am fully grown and 40kg... I am a large boy with long hair like a wolfhound and the same goofy, adoring temperament. I eat a normal puppy food (currently Blackhawk Large Breed Puppy, around $5/kg) and it is keeping me healthy and happy. We aren't sure what exact breed I am, but it really doesn't matter! One vet said maybe some Great Dane in me... not that it means anything. Regardless of my breeding, I have proven myself to be a beautiful and gentle dog, and that's what matters.
I can't wait to find my happy ending. If you think that's with you - please message my rescue, Off The Chain K9 Rescue Qld now!!
Medical notes
Being a large breed, it is recommended Kane use the following supplements.
4cyte Canine, $1/day - an oral joint support supplement containing Epiitalis, a unique plant oil extract, combined with marine concentrates including green lipped mussel, shark cartilage and abalone. Used together, these ingredients work synergistically to target the chemicals responsible for causing inflammation and impairing joint function. Based on his weight, maintenance dose is 1.6g of the powder form a day- we generally buy 200g tubs from PetCircle, which is a 125 day supply- for $120. So just under $1/day for his supplement.
Food- $5.30/kg for Blackhawk Large Breed Adult, bought in 40kg lots from PetCircle. He eats approx 4 cups, or 500g a day - meaning average daily kibble cost is just $2.65.

Once you are ready to adopt, please complete the OTC Adoption Application questionnaire below. This is not a contract or agreement of any kind, just an expression of interest in the animal. We will not authorise meets unless this has been completed and only approved applicants may meet the animal. Once you are approved and have submitted all relevant information, we will organise for you to meet the pet at your home, or in a public place. If you have other pets they must be at the meet. You may be required to travel to the pet; we infrequently have admins available to drive extensive distance and it also says a lot if someone is able yet unwilling to come to the animal they have applied for. If for example you cannot drive, feel free to talk with us about possibility of travel to you.
At the meet if you and the pet get along you have the option of either taking the pet on the spot (in exchange for signed contract and the full adoption fee paid upfront) or placing the pet on hold for up to 2 days with a $100 non-refundable holding deposit. This deposit is then taken off the original adoption fee should you proceed with the adoption. Should you place a hold, we will not proceed other applicants until you have removed your hold or adopted the animal.
*PLEASE NOTE we do not hold pets without a non-refundable holding deposit of $100. If you are unwilling to put a deposit on the pet, we will continue to advertise and speak with other potential adopters, so you may miss out. We have had to make the deposit is non refundable to avoid time-wasters. The $100 holding deposit is then subtracted from the outstanding adoption fee, which is to be paid at collection of the pet. Eg if full adoption fee is $450, and you place a $100 holding fee on the animal- the day you collect the pet you will sign an adoption contract and pay the remaining $350 fee of which $50 is non-refundable.
All animals are adopted out with vaccinations up to date; if for example you are adopting a young animal it may not have had a full protocol yet due to age- so any vaccinations due from date of adoption are the ethical and financial responsibility of the adopter. During the trial period, should the pet become ill, you must present it to the OTC-approved vet clinic in your area and OTC will cover any treatment needed.
So. Ready to roll? Then fill out the attached short form, and we will be in contact to successful applicants asap. Feel free to follow us up via Facebook page inbox.
