About Zola
Zola story
Jan 2019 – Zola was surrendered to the pound.
Her owner said she kept escaping “under” the fence so they had decided not to keep her
Zola was just a year old and her owner walked away effectively signing her death warrant.
You see surrendered dogs usually have the shortest time in the pounds because they are not strays or lost pets – no one is frantically looking for them, no one is coming to take them home.
They are often the first to be euthanised when the numbers swell – 3 days is a fair estimate for many dogs like Zola.
In an unusual twist the owner’s neighbours contacted the pound and begged them to find her safety. They told of a beautiful natured girl who just need a family who would love her ... a silly goofball puppy who just needed a chance.
We remember the day we heard her story well.
We were full to the seams with rescues (post-Christmas is the hardest time in rescue) and the calls for help kept on coming. It was late, we were drained, we had looked at so many dogs that needed saving NOW
That night we said yes to 7 more dogs .. 7 more that we had no space for but 7 faces that we couldn’t block out.
And that night Zola joined our family.
She arrived in Brisbane and settled well into her foster home. After her vet work was completed and she passed all her behaviour tests we found her a lovely family.
Another Happy Ending.
If only that was how it always ended
October 2019 – Zola was surrendered to the pound.
Her “owner” said he couldn’t remember where he got her and knew nothing about her.
He walked away effectively signing her death warrant.
You see surrendered dogs usually have the shortest time in the pounds because they are not strays – no one is frantically looking for them, no one is coming to take them home.
They are the first to be euthanised when the number swell – 3 days is a fair estimate for many dogs like Zola.
In an unusual twist one of our new carers saw her picture on the pound website and asked if we could help this dog.
She didn't know why but she knew this dog needed us.
And her original foster mums heart broke – she looked at the pictures and recognised her baby, a beautiful natured girl who just need a family who would love her .. a silly goofball puppy who just needed a chance.
It was OUR Zola.
We contacted the pound and were horrified to be told that she had been there a while and was listed for euthanasia as she was deemed not suitable for rehoming.
After initially being reserved she had become reactive to dogs passing by her cage so the decision was made.
We begged for a chance to see her and are eternally grateful that they agreed.
Her foster mum walked through the noise and mayhem and there she was .. lost and broken.
After a minute or two she turned her head and some recognition sparked in her .. she quietly and slowly came over and leant against the one person in this world she knew loved her.
And her foster mum whispered “ My Zola is still in there isn’t she”
So Zola came home.
We don’t know what happened to Zola after she left our family but we know it has broken her a little. We are so sorry you were let down again baby girl . We are so sorry we got it wrong.
In Rescue we all try so hard. We are reminded every day that people are not always kind or what they say they are but we cant give up because of them. We carry on in spite of them.
We need to fix the wrongs that have been done to a beautiful 2-year-old.
February 2020 – We start looking for Zola’s Happy Ever After
Zola can be reserved, and a can be a little anxious, but she has a huge heart and is great fun once she lets go.
She is not pushy for attention but welcomes it very much
She is in foster care with a male and female dog who she gets along famously with and would love a fur brother or sister.
However, she does need gentle initial introductions to other dogs as she can be anxious
