About Kevin
Kevin (also known as Kevie) is a gorgeous apricot miniature poodle - he just enjoys sitting on your lap - all day!
Kevin was surrendered to PMAWS because of a relationship breakdown.
He is definitely an inside dog and will only be permitted to go to a home where he will have access inside 24 hours a day. He does not enjoy being outside in the garden by himself. He is in fact used to sleeping on his previous owner's bed and does have some separation issues at nighttime. At 7 years of age, he is a bit set in his ways now and it would be cruel to try and change him.
Poodles do not do well outside - they love their owners unconditionally and want to spend as much time with them as they possibly can. He will need some daily exercise - a quick walk around the block will keep him happy.
Some information on the poodle breed: They are extremely people oriented and are eager to please. They are very good with children. A very intelligent dog, it is extremely easy to train and quick to learn. They make good watchdogs, barking at any unusual activity. They adapt well to family life.
Poodles appreciate exercise - they love to run - and because of their love of water, they should be well supervised around waterways.
Kevin will need to be clipped regularly (every 8 weeks or so) - as simple or as elaborate as the owner wishes. If carried out by a professional groomer, the cost each visit would be approximately $50. The hair under the tail should always be kept short and the feet and face should also be clipped short to prevent dirt from matting between toes, tear stains on lighter-coated poodles, and food from matting around the dog's muzzle. Weekly grooming is necessary to keep the coat, ears and tail free of knots.
Poodles have a single layer coat (no undercoat is present) that sheds minimally. They could be considered hypoallergenic (though not completely allergen free). The poodle does shed, but instead of the fur coming off the dog, it becomes tangled in the surrounding hair. This can lead to matting without proper care.
Kevin has recently been to our dog groomer today and now looks like a real poodle!
Kevin loves companionship and will reward his owner with life-long loyalty and devotion.
Application to adopt Kevin are now being accepted.
Adoption details
The first step is to phone (preferred ) or email Port Macquarie Animal Welfare Service for assessment regarding prospective ownership and pet suitability.
Adoption Application forms must be completed and include a vet reference and photos of yards and fencing. A property inspection will be carried out on properties in the Port Macquarie area.
New dog owners must have a fully secure, fenced yard offering protection from all types of weather, subject to approval by PMAWS.
A 2 week trial period commences on the day of adoption.
All PMAWS dogs & cats are desexed, vaccinated, heart & intestinal wormed, flea & tick treated.
Introducing a Kitten/Cat into a new home (especially where either a dog or cat already lives) can be a difficult challenge. It requires patience, perseverance and supervision.
Once your new kitten/cat arrives home, it should be made to feel safe in its own room - we call this the "sanctuary". \ No other cat or dog should be allowed into this room. The kitten/cat will need bedding, food, water, a view out of a window and somewhere to hide. A good idea in dog and cat families is also a 2 metre tall scratching post, where a kitten/cat can retreat if it needs to.
Keep the kitten/cat in a room for the first few days, then, gradually, using a series of wooden chocks (or similar), open the door slightly to allow paws and noses to meet. It can then be opened further to allow the kitten/cat in and out, but not the older cat or dog in. We recommend that this should be continued for 14 days.
PMAWS urges all owners to keep their cats indoors.
