About Leo
PLEASE NOTE THAT UNFORTUNATELY WE ARE UNABLE TO FLY OUR ANIMALS EITHER WITHIN WA OR INTERSTATE
NAME: Leo
BEFORE RESCUE: Came to SAFE Esperance as an owner surrender.
BREED: Labrador x Rottweiler
BREED TRAITS: Labrador bred as a companion and working (gun) dog Labradors are known as affectionate and loyal companions. Their good nature means they are friendly to family, children, other dogs and strangers - don't like being left for long periods. They are intelligent, and easy to train and have a low prey drive towards other species. Being a working breed they require a good amount of exercise and brain stimulation. They can tend towards obesity and are definitely not watch dogs.
The Rottweiler was originally bred to drive cattle to market – they have also served with police and in the military. They require experienced care and training as they are strong and intense but if given the right environment will be a loving, faithful and intelligent friend for life. This sensitive breed does not like to be left alone – they love their humans but need early and continued socialisation with dogs. Rottis are intelligent and require mental stimulation – a bored Rotti can be a destructive one – they also have a high prey drive. With high energy they are really only suited to active homes.

ASSETS: Easygoing, affectionate, cheeky, clever, friendly to everyone he meets, eager to please, sweet and playful! Leo loves to be around everyone and anyone and is a complete sweetheart!
FAVOURITE THINGS: Leo loves to be with his person, play with the other dogs in his foster home, chew his soft toys (which don’t last long), loves to run on the beach and really enjoys a game of fetch - he will bring back and drop. Once he’s finished playing he’ll happily curl up with you for a cuddle and snooze before getting up and starting all over again. He's a very loving boy who is waiting for his special buddy.
ENDEARING FEATURES: He’s a handsome boy who is affectionate and, for a puppy, is very chill. He’s loving his life and has a cheeky side that makes you smile and laugh.
OTHER ANIMALS: Leo enjoys the company of other friendly dogs and loves to play. He lived with a cat as a young pup and is quite interested in the cats at his foster home but could possibly live with a dog-savvy cat that will stand it's ground after gentle, supervised introduction.
GENERAL INFO: Leo walks well on the lead but does pull a little when he sees new things and gets excited. He enjoys travelling in the car and likes to get out and about with his people - he doesn't like to be left alone for long periods. He is housetrained and will bark at strange noises or to get attention. He can be destructive and look for things to chew when bored - typical pup - so will need some good indestructible chew toys to keep him busy - he loves his licky mat and playing with his toys. Leo can be a bit of a bull in a China shop so would not be suitable for small children. He's a smart boy and knows a few commands so further training should be a breeze with him.
ESSENTIALS for Leo:
** A loving home with someone who can be there with him for most of the day or can take him with them when they leave the house.
** Leo is a clever boy so will need daily exercise, playtime and mental activity. A home that is willing to involve him in daily activities is essential to keep him busy. Leo also needs to catch up with the early training that he missed – he is a bright spark and would thrive in classes.
** Leo needs a fenced, secure yard with grass and interesting things to sniff and explore.
**Leo loves to be with his people so he needs to be allowed inside the home when you are there and to sleep inside at night, preferably as close to his people as possible! At the moment he is crated at night and settles well. Leo is relaxed in the home but will fret if shut outside for long periods.
** Leo would best suit a home with dog-savvy children over 12 years of age who will be able to read his signals, or an adult only home. He would love another dog with a similar energy to live and play with or at the least have regular interaction with other friendly dogs.
If Leo sounds like the perfect fit for your family, please send an enquiry and we’ll be in touch soon.
