About Harley (and Jasper)
Harley and Jasper are 13 and 11 yo Shih Tzu X half brothers. They are a bonded pair and will need to find a new home together.
Jasper first – as usual! This cheeky boy is a joy to have around. Sure, he steals his brother’s stuff and pushes in front for pats, but he is a very happy, independent and friendly dog. Mostly he wants to sleep (on the couch preferably, or in the sun) but he has learnt the joys of having a good bounce, playing with toys and chewing on bones. He is not a cuddly dog and is much happier being next to you than on your lap. Jasper is clever and has learnt a lot just from watching his foster sister (not from listening to his foster mum!) – with the right training he would probably be able to learn basic commands.
Jasper has allergies but it’s not clear yet what he is reacting to. He is on a skin support diet with a special cooked food as well. Currently he is being bathed 2-3 times a week in a medicated wash and he is fully clothed to stop him from licking or chewing at himself.
Harley is the sweetheart of the two and is happier to be cuddled. He is very relaxed and has little bounces in the morning when he is happy to see you. His only bad habit is that he can be vocal – he will try it on if he thinks you might forget to feed him or he is missing out on something! In his spare time, Harley likes to lick his bed endlessly. Or his brother’s bed, or his brother... whatever is closest really. He has aspirations of being a lap dog and will take as much patting as you can give him before Jasper pushes in! He likes to sleep on the couch as well and snores away like a freight train.
Harley has Cushings and is on a mobility support diet. He needs to be kept on a strict diet to control his weight and also needs to be washed 1-2 times a week due to his skin being affected by the Cushings. He has weakness in his legs, and while he is very much improved since arriving into care, he will still sometimes lose his front legs out from under him and slide onto the floor. He is also currently having a medicated wash for his ears twice a week to help clear them after a bad infection. Foster mum suspects he may be a bit deaf as he is sometimes startled to find her there suddenly, but he does respond to barking from his foster sister so he is obviously not totally deaf (or he may have selective hearing).
Both are good with guests, other dogs and appear to be good with cats. They travel well in the car and walk well on the lead, however Harley can only make shorter distances before he is worn out. They love children but due to their health issues, particularly for Harley as he can fall easily, it would be best for a home where there are no young children living with them. They are very happy to sleep in their own beds and even in a separate room. They are used to being left by themselves all day so would suit people who are out at work more often, but they do require a bit more TLC so will need someone who can give that extra attention to their health needs.
Medical notes
Harley has been diagnosed with Cushings. He is on medication for this which will cost about $50 per week. He will also require blood tests twice per year.
Jasper has some allergy issues and will require regular baths to keep his skin comfortable.
Both have had blood tests and dentals.
These two just need someone with love to give and time to take care of them so that they can enjoy a happy and comfortable retirement. They will repay you one hundred fold in love.
Adoption details
If you are interested in one of our dogs, please complete an adoption application form at:
https://hsedr.org.au/index.php/adoption/
At a minimum, we will expect that all of our dogs will be inside/outside dogs and will be treated as a valued member of the family.
If your family needs match the needs of the dog, we will call you to arrange for you to meet the puppy you are interested in and organise a mutually convenient time with you to undertake a fence/home check - and for the dog you are interested in to meet the rest of the family - both human and other animals.
If you feel that you would like to add the dog to your family, we will ask you to pay the adoption fee and the dog will commence a 4 week trial period - for all of you (both humans and pets) to make sure that you will all be happy living together. We will check in on you during this time and will be available to respond to any concerns you may have during this period.
If everyone is happy at the conclusion of the trial, we will transfer the microchip and provide you with any medical records and information we have on the dog you have adopted.
We will take the dog back into care at any time - if things do not work out - and we appreciate that sometimes - they just don't - for a number of reasons.
We will ask for a happy snap of the dog with their new family members for our adoption gallery and will ask whether we can use that in promoting our rescue on Facebook, the Internet or other promotional materials.
We want the process of adoption to be a happy and exciting time for you and your potential new family member and will work with you to make the experience as positive as possible.
AN OPEN LETTER TO APPLICANTS:
We understand that people are making an emotional investment when they apply to adopt a dog and that it is disappointing if you are not chosen. We don’t like disappointing people. It’s really hard to do but when there is only a single dog and many hopeful applications, it is inevitable that people will be upset. We would like to take this opportunity to explain our philosophy.
When we take on a dog, we make a commitment both to that dog and the former owners of that dog to find them their perfect next forever home. Our key consideration is whether that home is a good match for that dog. We are the only advocate the dog has and must put their needs ahead of applicants. Each dog has very different needs and personality and each home is different to the next.
Sometimes, people put their friends in touch with us or we are approached by our own friends or family about a particular dog. This is done with the best intentions and makes it even harder to say No but sometimes we must, as their requirements and the needs of the dog are not the same.
This isn’t a reflection of their dog ownership skills, or how we feel about them personally. Our decision is always based on what we believe is the best match for the dog. Not just any match - the best match!
Often, we have several or even many interested parties who would equally be a good match and it is exceedingly difficult to choose between them. Our decision is never based on our relationship with a potential adopter, or the number of times they have applied and missed out or whether they applied first, or the number of times or ways they’ve tried to contact us about a particular pet, but whether or not they are the BEST match available.
If you or someone you know is interested in any of the dogs at Hope Springs Eternal, please fill out an adoption application. Please do not take offence if you or your friends are not chosen - this only means that there was someone who was a better match. Not a better person, not a better dog owner, but a better match.
We believe there is a home for every dog and a dog for every home, so even if you haven’t been chosen before, please keep applying - the next one may be your perfect doggy match.
