About Djarlu - Dingo
Hi my name is Djarlu and I'm a shy sweetheart looking for a quiet home with patience and lots of TLC to give.
I'm an alpine dingo! Many people don't realize that we can be black and tan and many other colours.
In my previous life before I was rescued I didn't have much human contact, it was a bad place and I was kept in a dark shed for breeding. But after a couple of years of TLC with Sydney Dingo Rescue I've learned that not all humans are bad, in fact most of them are pretty great, especially when they bring me treats or take me on long bush walks.
I take quite a long time ( a month or two) to trust people enough to come up to them for pats on my own. I'm very gentle and even when I'm scared I won't bite, I just want to hide until I feel safe.
I love walks, and once I get to know you, we can go on quiet bushwalks together or walks in the park away from scary cars and busy roads. I'd rather avoid the hustle and bustle of cafes or markets though- let's just hang out together away from crowds one-on-one.
I'm very social with other dogs, I've never met another dog I don't like, but because I'm a playful 18kg, a home with a medium dog or large dog friend would be best for me. No cats, pocket pets or birds please as I might mistake them for a snack or play too rough.
I could have a home with older kids (12+) but they will need to be patient and understand that I will be timid at first and shy of sudden movements and loud noises. I need to be able to build trust and feel safe with my new family and once I do, I will be the sweetest boy- ready to rest my head in your lap for ear scratches or sleep by the foot of your bed.
I don't bark, but I do sometimes howls if I'm excited at dinner time.
Like all dingoes I'm a good climber and digger! This means I need secure fencing and will require one of the following: 2.2m colourbond fencing OR a dog enclosure OR a secure 1.8 meter fence with top angling or flat-top extensions (http://www.dog-blog-world.com/dog-fence/).
Animal rescue is considered essential. SFDR can still come to you for meet and greets, yard checks and animal adoptions. We have volunteers in Canberra and New South Wales and can come to you even if you we are not in your local government area. Distance is not an issue when we are looking for the perfect homes for our dingoes. Please note we have COVID safety measures in place.
Adoption details
Please note at this time pending legal advice we are unable to offer fox kit adoption to private owners.
Dingo Adoption:
1. Send an email inquiry with your name and contact details outlining your current living situation, pets and family members and anything else you think might be relevant, particularly what your house and yard are like. Remember our dingoes typically require an enclosure or modified fencing.
2. We will email you back adoption information and an application form to fill out and return to us.
3. If your application is approved- Come along to meet us and our dingoes at our Gouburn shelter or their foster carers home and let us find the right furry family member for you. We can also come to you. We drive dingoes all over NSW and the ACT to meet families interested in adoption.
4. Before you can pick up your new dingo you will also need to under a house/yard check and pay your adoption fee. No animals are rehomed unless their adoption fee is paid in full and a yard check has been completed.
